REVIEWS

...an evocative album that deserves much attention.
author: The WholeNote Magazine
In his music Kitchener-Waterloo guitarist Kevin Ramessar hears “the invitation of the Dancer, calling me ever closer into a dance with Him…” This disc is Ramessar’s own invitation to join him in that dance. But do not expect Bacchanalian excesses here: though the playing is often passionate, it is always restrained – beautifully contemplative most times.... Ramessar’s debut CD offers a selection of less familiar works by well-known composers complemented by improvisations of his own. ...Ramessar’s technique is impressive... The intimacy of Ramessar’s playing is captured by the close miking and ambient recorded sound. Obviously this is a very personal project for the talented guitarist – it’s as if Ramessar were inviting the listener to simply stop and admire the music’s (and his) many nuances. Echoes is an evocative album that deserves much attention. ---Kevin McMillan, Wholenote Magazine, October 2002

Ramessar’s playing captures the dramatic tension that results when [the temporal
author: Howard Dyck, CBC / The Kitchener Record
This delightful recording by Waterloo classical guitarist Kevin Ramessar cuts a broad stylistic swath, and the result is entirely satisfying. The repertoire includes music by Barrios, Bach, Albeniz, Brouwer and Guiliani, as well as a couple of charming improvisations by the performer. Ramessar is clearly an accomplished guitarist. Intonation, agility, tone, phrasing – all of these key elements are securely in place. But he is also a thoughtful musician. He sets out the premise of the recording when he writes, “In the music we listen to, in the things we create… in relationships and even in ourselves, we hear echoes of something beyond, of a reality that transcends our own.” Listening to this thoroughly engaging CD and thinking about Ramessar’s ideas, I was reminded of Bach, for whom all music was a great cosmic dance between the temporal and the ineffable worlds. Ramessar’s playing captures the dramatic tension that results when those worlds intersect. --- Howard Dyck is host of CBC Radio’s Choral Concert and Saturday Afternoon at the Opera. He is also artistic director of the K-W Philharmonic Choir. His classical CD reviews appear monthly.
