Ed Blanco (Jazz CD reviews; DJ on 88.9 FM Serious Jazz)
Selections from this CD are scheduled to be featured on the Jazz Cafe program 88.9 FM Serious Jazz, Miami and on the podcast, The Jazz Show from the Podcast Network.
Originally from Maine and now a San Francisco-based jazz vocalist, Rancourt has kept busy honing her skills in many of the Bay Area jazz clubs and is intent on making a name for herself. In 2005 she released her debut recording. 'Live At Kelly's' one of the finest jazz settings in the Bay Area, where she recorded ten tunes from the Great American Songbook.
In March of this year she went into the studio and recorded this self titled CD in which she again chose to voice five more classic standards and interpret them in her own unique way. Included here are Billie Holiday's 'God Bless The Child', the Kurt Weil/ Ogden Nash immortal 'Speak Low', the Ellington/Strayhorn slow soft ballad 'Something To Live For', 'Who Will Buy', and Cy Coleman's, 'Witchcraft'.
Pianist Randy Porter contributes excellent solos throughout and provides all of the arrangements. John Wiitala?s play on the bass is the glue that holds the trio together while drummer Vince Lateano makes his presence known whether on the sticks or the brushes as on Strayhorn?s ballad.
