When I first heard the tragic story of Matthew Shepard's death, I was saddened and outraged. I wanted to kick in my television set, scream and cry. Instead, I went to my piano to find solace in my music. What transpired was the song “What Matters." The song honors Matthew's life, his family and the unconditional love they represent.

My intention was only to send this song to the Shepards as a form of condolence. However, one evening in San Diego I felt compelled to play the song at a small coffeehouse, where Dana LeeWood was in attendance. Dana had also been touched by their story and was so moved by the song, that she proceeded to give me free studio time to record it. Several musicians donated their talents to the piece and along with the help of small businesses and private investors, we were able to record and release the song as a benefit single. All of the proceeds from the song are donated to The Matthew Shepard Foundation and other anti-hate crime charities.

I have spent the past three years touring to promote the single and raise awareness. The song has been featured in several documentaries, TV specials and a commercial directed by Spike Lee. “What Matters” also appeared in the NBC film, “The Matthew Shepard Story." To date, the single has raised over $25,000 dollars for the Foundation. Composer Kevin Robison, recently arranged the piece for Men's ,Women's and combined choirs. The sheet music, which will be published and distributed by Yelton Rhodes Music, will also directly benefit the Matthew Shepard Foundation.

This work and this song are the most important things I have ever done in my life. I am continuously inspired by the angels around us that do so much to see that this type hatred and ignorance is stopped.
