Randy's voice is more moving than ever
author: David Foss
As is his songwriting, judging by his latest CD (his second after a very long absence from the recording scene). The years have weathered his voice some, but it hasn't lost its power and unique colors. And he still has the ability to tell a story in a way that makes you see it happening before your eyes--and makes you care about the people in that story. Even if you never got to hear Randy back in the Skydog Band days (a best-of compilation from the Skydog Band LPs is available via his website, RandyBurns.net), you should check this CD out for some beautifully written and performed folk music, sung by a voice you won't forget. A special highlight is his unique arrangement of Cole Porter's "Everytime We Say Goodbye," a song that I thought had no new wrinkles left. Another is "Old Fashion Christmas," which is sweetly reminiscent of his classic tune "Christmas Lights." Also check out his previous CD, The Simple Things, for more beautiful folk tunes plus some rockers with full band (more in the Skydog style), and Exit and Gaslight Years, a best-of compilation from his first three LPs, also available at randyburns.net
