Album Notes

Randy Waller

Born in Washington , DC in 1959, Randy grew up surrounded by the music of the Country Gentlemen. "Those musicians were like family to me," he says of giants like Eddie Adcock, Jimmy Gaudreau, Bill Yates, Ricky Skaggs, Jerry Douglas and Doyle Lawson. Spending the school year on a farm with his father's sister in Tennessee , he traveled the roads with his dad (the late Charlie Waller) in the summers, soaking up groundbreaking music and learning the rigors of life in a traveling bluegrass band. When he finished his schooling, he chose to make his living outside of bluegrass, developing a solo career that found him opening for major country acts, fronting regional country and country-rock bands and teaching guitar in Richmond , Virginia - an experience that immersed him in the musical world of his generational peers. Today, Randy is still laying down those lyrical ballads and complex instrumentals that define his musical past and present.

I really like it, I sure do

I have been hosting a bluegrass / americana radio show for long enough that I best not think too hard. But I know I was playing Country Gentlemen records when they were only on vinyl, and they had a blue Rebel label on them, except for the earliest ones which were on Folkways. So I am very pleased to hear the sounds on this CD, by the group now headed up by Randy, whose rich voice and fine sounding flat top box I think would make all the Gents fans proud. This one has a very nice mix of tunes, and I like all the cuts, but probably so far, my bones like to wander up and hear “Old Kentucky Hillside” about the best. Randy’s got a great voice. If you have not yet got yourself RW & Country Gents recordings, this is a great place to start, and then work backward. – Rik James (KGLT-FM, Bozeman, MT)
