RANI SINGAM first started creating a stir in the Singapore jazz scene in the year 2000 when she started doing performances at corporate parties and community concerts. In 2002, a few prominent Singaporean and visiting American musicians were sitting in the Blue Note in Singapore and one of the musicians put on demo CD of Rani without telling the other who it was. One of the musicians said "hey...this sounds like an early Billie Holliday recording, except that the sound quality is too clear to be from that era." It was then revealed that the recording was by Rani Singam. All present were extremely impressed and they asked someone who knew her to ask her to come down to the Blue Note and perform that very night as a guest!
Since then, Rani has gone on to perform at various high profile corporate events as well as at well known jazz nightspots in Singapore, namely the famed Harry's Jazz Bar in Singapore, Jazz at Southbridge and the Blue Note in Singapore.
Recently, at the Businessman of The Year Award 2003 in Singapore, Rani was introduced to the Singapore business community as "the next big thing in jazz vocals in Asia." She is continuing to make waves in the Singapore jazz scene and is set to spread her singing talents far and wide with the release of her debut CD in 2004.
Rani sings in a style which is truly reminiscent of the great jazz singers she admires. One clearly hears the influence of singers such as Sarah Vaughn, Anita O'Day and Billie Holliday melded in with her own style, to create a sound which is both familiar and fresh at the same time.
She also has a truly endearing way of connecting with the audience and when you watch her perform, you feel as though she was singing directly to you. Her repertoire straddles everything from swinging jazz standards, torch ballads and smooth bossa nova tunes.
Come listen to the next big thing in Asian jazz vocals, Rani Singam.

Awesome debut from a singer with a unique voice.

Put simply, I love it. Rani's voice is incredibly pure in this recording, and one can see what the hype is about. The backing band is tight as hell and carries the music in a way that can only be described as perfect.
