A longstanding favorite
author: Stephen Ellner
I bought Cowboy Dancing on cassette about 15 years ago when Ray\'s contradance band The Hillbillies from Mars came through town, and it has been an often-played favorite ever since then (and I just bought 2 CD copies, to expiate the cassette copies made for friends). Ray is good enough as a singer, but as a fiddler he\'s somebody you want to mimic note-by-note when you learn one of the tunes yourself. You get the feeling that these are songs and tunes that Ray loves and he\'s putting them out so you can love them too. This CD is all about the music, rather than the musician showing off his chops: great material, fine playing, and not a single moment that\'s false or strained.
