"RADIO TRAILS", by jazz guitarist Ray Gehring & Commonwealth, is his second outing on Evan Music. As the opening title suggests, a re-working of Supertramp's pop classic, go ahead, take the long way home! Radio Trails (produced by Chuck Zwicky & co-produced by pianist Bill Carrothers & Gehring) embraces the listener right off with it's big sound and rich, warm tones that you really want to drive the longer way home, go another subway stop or two & finish this album out.
Radio Trails is a tribute to the spirit of 1970's radio. It's a diverse program of 10 songs (7 covers and 3 originals) including two vocalists (Dan Gaarder & Sean Wayland). Featuring: "Take The Long Way Home", "She", "E Preciso Perdoar", "Big Brother", "Motion Pictures", "Radial Tales", "That Was the Story", "Stay a While", "Amor Brasiliero", & "Yesterday Once More". These expansive sounding songs are programmed to give the listener the feeling of what they may have stumbled upon as they switched through the radio dial in the 1970's - all through a contemporary wide-angle and full-spectrum lens!!
There is a broad musical tapestry at work here with an impressive line-up of musicians. Once again Gehring pays close attention to his rich tone and melodic detail to narrate these familiar and new musical "stories". Beautifully mixed & mastered by engineer/producer Chuck Zwicky who's resume includes such guitarists as Brandon Ross, Andy Summers, Jef Lee Johnson, Jeff Beck, & Prince to name a few. A lot of fun must have gone into the making of Radio Trails because it sure makes for a enjoyable listen!
