Not true, Lance.......Grammy nominated arranger, songwriter, producer and bass singer Richard Bob Greene - founding member of the a cappella super group the Bobs - casts off his chains of bass-dom in this solo record and takes the elevator to the stars.....or at least to the first floor.

"Low? Bottom? Me?" is jazz in orientation, with snippets of Dixieland, a languid a cappella bossa nova, wistful balladry, an amazing dance remix of the Bobs' classic recording of "Helter Skelter", and a generous dollop of neo-hipster spoken word.

Greene's seemingly bottomless voice sounds lived in, but he's one hundred percent believable and more - sometimes low-down, and at other times with wit as dry as a martini.

The CD features a stellar cast of session players and singers including Mary Fettig on saxes, Andrew Chaikin on vocal percussion, Joe Finetti on vocals and trombone, Steve Erquiaga on guitar and Gunnar Madsen on vocals.

  • Wraps itself around your head like a musical hug

    Over on his website (http://www.richardbobgreene.com) he relates the tale of how he came to make an album with almost no use of a studio. Basically modern technology let him record most of the tracks in his home and the homes of the other artists. That friendly, relaxed feeling carries through to the finished product. If you're having a party, put this CD on and everyone will instantly feel welcome. Darn good to listen to by yourself too!

    Any Bobs fan should chew off an arm to get this CD! (Pseudo fans just cough up the $15.95 plus shipping) The combination of talent is amazing! Mr. Greene combines them, mixes them into a jazzy gumbo that is subtle yet surprizing. "Too Cool to Care" and "Helter Skelter" are remixes of Bobs arrangements spiced up with instruments providing that extra touch of verve. I was unfamiliar with saxophonist Mary Fettig before this album but I will certainly look for more of her work. I actually got into an argument with some friends over which tracks were drums and which were Andrew Chaikin's vocal percussion (the liner notes helped avoid bloodshed) "Searching for Poetry" and "Growing Roses" provides us with an introspective look at the composer's serious side. "Let's Go Wild" is a fun, yet mellow "to do" list for us over 40's featuring Joe Finetti on trombone. Get this CD!!!!!!
