Russell Buddy Helm has written two books on the healing and spiritual power of drumming: "Drumming the Spirit to Life" and "Way of the Drum" on Llewellyn Worldwide publishing. He is classically trained and has toured and recorded with a lot of music greats including Tim Buckley, Mike Bloomfield, Big Joe Turner, Frank Zappa, the Allman Brothers, Bethlehem Asylum, Panama Red, Charlie Dechant, Kinky Friedman, Peter Ivers, and many others.
He tours frequently around the U.S giving drumming meditation workshops that are fun, danceable, deep trance inducing and spiritually tranformational. He has been teaching this unique form of drumming in Santa Monica, California at Seasons-on-Montana since 1987.
"Protection Drum Prayers" is a hand drumming based musical trance CD designed to create safety and protection. By listening or playing along to the simple grooves the intended effect is to create protection around ourselves and our community. This is the first of a series of CDs designed to create specific realities using rhythm and tone. The songs are all easy to play along to and Charlie Dechant(taking a break from touring with Hall and Oates and Michael Macdonald) lends great jazz and rhythm and blues feel to the songs. Buddy, Charlie and Panama Red were in Bethlehem Asylum together and recorded two albums for Capricorn records several decades ago. Buddy's website is buddyhelm.com
