Killing Time - 2004
Robert Bruce Scott: Vocals, Guitars, Bass Guitar, Drums, Keyboard, Leather Armchair, Notebook Paper
Robert's 6th cd is fun, alternative rock driven by electric guitar, whimsical lyrics and powerful vocal performance.
Each RBS cd is completely different from the last and that trend continues... Killing Time is filled with references to time and has a very unified feel and a natural flow from song to song. Robert uses the distorted sound sparingly, generally prefering the clean sound produced by a modified 1976 Ovation Breadwinner Deacon. The sounds of this unique instrument drive the album.
As always, Robert's lyrics are involved: thick with references to M.C. Esher and Rene Magritte and bristling with visual imagry. The songs are rich with layered vocal and guitar tracks. While previous RBS albums (The Light and Virtual America) were driven by Robert's keyboard work, on this album the keys only appear on "U-Boat" and "Daylight Again."
"U-Boat" is an instrumental description of a ride on a submarine and is reminescent of some of the work of Pink Floyd. The end of "In the Time Alotted" is clearly inspired by Phillip Glass and other tracks on this cd contain musical references to the Beatles and Yes.
Robert's current projects include il Troubadore - Indy's 16th Century Rock Band. Formed with cellist Jonathan Silpayamanant in 2004, the band has garnered notoriety around Indianapolis for their unique instrumentation (mandolin & cello), their offbeat covers of popular music from the 11th Century to the present, and their work with belly dancers, featuring original songs with strong middle-eastern folk influences.
