Robert Deeble's music discourages comparison but his imagery and approach on this record conjures influences of "Leonard Cohen, Nick Cave and Lou Reed, all wound up in a tight little ball" (Live Magazine).

Album Notes

"Earthside Down" (1999 Jackson Rubio), has became one of Robert's more pivotal releases. Penned by The Santa Barbara Independent as "Wistful folk-pop, sparsely arranged, gracefully performed, and achingly beautiful to behold," the record is darker in tone than many of Deeble's previous recordings yet with a certain weightlessness that retains hope. Produced with the partnership of drummer Stephen Hodges (Tom Waits) and Anthony Arvizu, this record has stood alone as one of Robert's more personal works and adventurous studio endeavors. Often described as cinematic this recording is highly orchestral featuring a large cast of guesting instrumentalists behind Robert's spoken-word-like vocals.

Robert Deeble has four distributed releases along with several one offs, comps and vinyl singles. He has supported shows for Low, Ida, The Kingsbury Manx, Pedro The Lion, Shannon Wright, Victoria Williams, Songs:Ohia, Over The Rhine and Steppenwolf (yes Steppenwolf...). He currently resides in Seattle Washington. Distributed Discography: Days Like These (cd 1997), Earthside Down (1998/99), Boots of Spanish Leather (vinyl/cd comp 2001), Thirteen Stories (2004), This Bar Has No One Left (2005).

Music for the first light of morning, the shadows that are slowly pushed back with bird song and the orange fingers of the sun. Music for a heart that needs a sparse song to sing to, a wistful lullaby, a naked truth to lean on. Weaving delicate influences of vulnerable emo, lo-fi folk and charming, melancholy pop, Deeble's album caresses and lulls, whispers and lilts its way through time and space, enchanting the sentimental nature in all who let it reach them.

cd baby linked my cd as a "sounds like." after hearing it, i immediately bought it. i thought this cd was great. it caught me immediately: the first two tracks especially. the title track "earthside down" is the best on the album. i repeat this one over and over again. the lyrics: (you crave convention in a sound bite/never mind the prophets at your door/you want a motorcycle ride)! i loved everything about those lines. i felt like: here is a truth. the cd pretty awesome!!!! buy this thing!

Deeble has a deep and breathy, cracked-earth voice, kind of a laid-back mix of Dylan, Lou Reed, and a three-o'clock-in-the-morning whispering Bono. "Earthside Down" contains delicate acoustic picking, deep cello vibrations, sparse percussion, and a stand-up bass that hums and thumps wonderfully in the speakers. Ambient drum loops percolate on several tracks, and they bring a welcome change in atmosphere without destroying the organic nature of Deeble's music.
