Album Notes

"I would be the first to admit that I am not a big fan of holiday CDs, but every now and then I am very pleasantly surprised. This is one such occasion. Rebecca Hovan's CD contains well-known and popular carols, each performed with a new twist that keeps the music fresh. The opening jazz rendition of 'God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen' is well put together and convincingly played. Other tracks have similar variety, heard in Hovan's own arrangements for different instrumental combinations, such as multiple flute versions of 'Away in a Manger' and 'Carol of the Bells' and the hypnotic 'O Come, O Come Emmanuel.' The 'Old St. Nick Rag' adds a wonderfully humorous element to the proceedings, while the jazz version of 'Silent Night' is smooth and atmospheric. With a CD of such variety, it is quite likely that listeners will have some favorite tracks and some with which they are less taken, but the arrangements are handled well and performed with style."

Husband
author: Michael Hovan

The jazz pieces are marvelous and O Come Emmanuel is spectacular. As the husband of the artist, I could just be quiet if I did not like the album. But, I cannot be quiet. I like variety and this album is chock full of it. Granted, it could use a bluegrass or country tune, but that will have to wait for another time. This CD shows off Rebecca's arranging skills as much as her flute playing and there is a lot of flute playing! She can compose and play in many styles with many different artists. If it were not for the already mentioned jazz and O Come pieces, the flute and guitar selections would be my top choices I spend a great deal of time listening to the New Age Mix station on Pandora - this CD can hold its own in that arena. Yes, I may be proud to be the husband of the artist and arranger. This is way too good to be a first effort.
