Take a dollop of Mingus, a dram of vintage Yes, a couple of pours of Gentle Giant and Zappa, a dash of Tull, a sprinkle of McLaughlin, an ounce of prevention and a pound of pot, mix it, roll it, bake it, and you get "The Rebel Wheel".

notes

The Rebel Wheel is a modern progressive-rock ensemble based out of Ottawa Ontario. With influences that range from Gentle Giant to Frank Zappa, the band features a frenetic mix of rock aggression, odd-meter vamps, and turn-on-a-dime arrangements. They have a floating membership based around the core line-up of bass, drums and guitar, and their style can go from complex bop-oriented fusion to balls-to-the-wall guitar rock, to African, Indian and Celtic percussion madness.

The band has just finished recording their debut CD "The Rebel Wheel", scheduled for a fall release on Ottawa's independent label "Rostfrei Records". The album highlights tight, complex arrangements and multi-textured driving instrumentals. The band uses a huge assortment of acoustic, electric and electronic instruments so that synth-dominated sections often rub shoulders with entirely acoustic ones. Through it all, the band brings excellent musicianship, well-rehearsed arrangements, and an indominatable sense of drama to the music.

The Rebel Wheel was formed in 2000 by core members, bassist Pelle Vadim and guitarist David Campbell. They both share a love of the progressive rock bands of the seventies (especially Gentle Giant), as well as some of the more modern fusion bands (like Earthworks & The Electric Band), and decided to form a unit of their own. To complete the recording line-up, they drafted long-time friend, multi-instrumentalist Chris Plock on saxes and midi winds, midi percussionist Cab Lind, and Nils Bell on keyboards.

I love for music to take me where I haven't been before. The music on this album does just that! The writing and musicianship is top-notch and though there are influences here and there, they manage to remain in their own unique and intelligent style. Very highly recommended for the prog or fusion enthusiast! Get this CD, put it in your player and be prepared to enjoy!
