Album Notes

Red Beans & Rice, a Monterey Bay based blues band, specializes in up-tempo danceable blues. Formed in 1993, their blend of Chicago, Texas swing, Louisiana, contemporary and original music has garnered them numerous awards. Performing throughout the West Coast at various Festivals and venues, Red Beans & Rice has shared the stage with some of the greats in blues and has released four self produced albums containing their unique original compositions as well as some covers of lesser known classics. The group is comprised of a veteran lineup of musicians including Gil Rubio on guitar; Joe Vallaire on bass and vocals; Jamey De Maria on drums; Tom Lawson on keyboards and vocals; Tamas Marius on saxophones; and Bishop Mayfield on vocals and percussion.

With the release of their 4th CD, Hot ‘n Spicy, Red Beans & Rice continues their voyage - a trek begun over a dozen years ago in a search for a certain sound -the perfect gumbo, if you will. Born and raised on the Monterey Peninsula, the band started off auspiciously enough winning the Best New Band Award from the South Bay Blues Society. During the next decade the band won numerous awards; released 3 well received albums; played countless festivals, clubs and private parties; and underwent numerous personnel changes - all along staying true to their original goal - to create a sound of their own while still being true to the roots of the blues.

Hot ‘n Spicy is the logical next step in the band’s development - some muddy steps into New Orleans or N’awlins if you prefer. Tight rhythm grooves, rollickin’ piano chops, earthy percussion, even an accordion - it all came together to make for a nice tasty treat.
