The power of songwriting...
author: Pascal G. Niemeier
I first heard Bob Forbes' music in summer 2005, after he started to present some huge guitar instrumental tracks as REDEYEC on a well-frequented independent music site - and I was immediately in love with his unique guitar picking and last but not least I became really a true fan of his ability to create classic rock arrangements of cinematic power and with a clear vision, performed by a master of ALL the instruments, and I guess I already told him a thousand times. Well, this is no wonder - after decades of making music in different genres with his band Red Eye Country and quite successful as Country singer in the Eighties as well, this artist always loved to follow his passionate journey between popular directions, with the help of his beloved guitars and also modern equipment and tools, and he never forgot his own authentic expression and style.
Besides his many instrumental albums - "Collaboration", "Menagerie" and "Firebird", just to name the newest ones - Bob Forbes surprised his audience as a singer, with a beautiful album for the Christian genre in 2007. "From the church of St. Ann" proves a rare talent for songwriting in the way of super rock groups, similar to Matthew Fisher's Procol Harum and other idols of the classic rock era.
And the second vocal album "Shalia" is more than just a sequel of this additional path in Bob's music career... while the Christian messages had to be provided by softer moods and ballads with sometimes hymnic expression, "Shalia" will blow you away with personal lyrics and powerful, dramatic moments in "If Only" and "Goodbye for Now", and catchy songs like "My Mistake" and "Secret" should work nicely on air. "Why the Children" is a strong duet with the incredible Australian artist Leanne Bugat, and they both continue - in a cooler way -, with "Just a Game". And Bob goes so different ways with his mesmerizing upbeat-electronica track "Chronicles of Pascal and Minouche", including very nice sound experiments, while keeping the energy of a rock song. Bob goes progressive ways with the almost epic "Island of Desire", a firework of moods between bitter sweet ballad ways and angry rock expression. Last but not least, the two ballads "Shalia" and "Day by Day" (written by Corrado Rossi) are the tracks which I would call "favorite songs" for the moment... but that can change every day.
"Shalia" is a piece of art and a work from the heart, a true songwriter's great album filled up with melodic tracks between light and shades, there's not a single "average track". Bob knows how to awake the magic of classical rock again, touching us with his voice and his honest way of making music, which does never appear as just a routine. I can't get this album out of my disc changer!
