Album Notes

On their latest release, James, Red Molly delivers an eclectic, exciting mix of cover songs by well-known writers (Nanci Griffith, Steve Goodman, Bob Wills, Darrell Scott, etc.), originals, and songs by up-and-coming writers (Jonathan Byrd, Anthony da Costa).  The "Mollies" opted to self-produce this album, with talented engineer Mark Dann at the reins.  Recording with a drummer (Ben Wittman) for the first time, but keeping the Red Molly signature sound, the ladies delve into some darker material, yet balance it with some hopeful, playful songs.  Fred Gillen Jr. sings a beautiful duet on "Gulf Coast Highway" and Herb Gardner (Abbie’s father) adds his stride piano chops to "The End of The Line", a Texas swing standard.  The venerable Mike Weatherly is back on upright bass, and Jake Armerding guests on fiddle and mandolin, and lends his songwriting talent, on "Falling In".  Abbie wrote two songs for the record ("Jezebel" and "Troubled Mind"), and plays lap steel on a couple of tracks.  On James, Red Molly has beautifully captured what their fans love about the band: dark and heart-wrenching one moment, fun and uplifting the next.

Red Molly- "James"
author: Bill King

Red Molly “James” I always tell people that when you die and go to the Big Acoustic Coffeehouse in the Sky (Heaven) that all the Angels will sound like Emmylou Harris well after “James” I will now add that the opener will sound like Red Molly. Since the forming in 2004 Red Molly has perfected Folk, Bluegrass, Country and Jazz and now they added another style Western Swing to the list covering Bob Wills “The End of the Line” It gotten to the point if you walked into a record store and asked the salesperson “Excuse Me can you tell me what section I can find Red Molly?” Is going to get you a mean look and a “What are You a Wise Guy?” Self Produced with 13 cuts keeping in there familiar pattern of pulling songs of other songwriters such Jonathan Byrd, Nanci Griffith, The late Steve Goodman including friend Anthony da Costa’s “The Last Call” the opening track among other writers and making these songs there own. There are 2 songs written by Abbie Gardner Troubled Mind and Jezebel. Speaking of Ms. Gardner Abbie’s Dad Herb sits in on the sessions playing Piano. Awesome collection I highly recommend. In closing I would like to offer a suggestion to all aspiring songwriters out there if you have a song that you thing deserves attention you might want to get it into the hands of Laurie, Abbie or Carolann because if they like it you know it has possibilities and may be included in a future Red Molly Project. Go out and Purchase “James” You will Love It.
