If it's Redtime, it's a blow-out! Led by spirited frontman Ethan Eubanks and Made up of musicians that have toured and recorded with artists such as the Black Crowes and Janet Jackson, Redtime itself has shared stages with No Doubt, De La Soul, and G-Love & Special Sauce. With their slamming alterna-pop/hip hop/rock grooves, Redtime manages to get even the most unsuspecting up on their feet, onto the table, singing along. Redtime's the gift that keeps on giving--something you'll always remember.
a review from indie-music.com:
By Jennifer Layton
I've been seeing Redtime's name everywhere. When I flew to NYC a couple of years ago, solo acoustic artists were asking me if I'd heard this band. When I went through a stint of reviewing NYC jazz artists, I found their web sites linked to Redtime's. I keep the Bitter End website bookmarked, and one would think this band was living there. I finally e-mailed their management and asked for a CD.
I tossed it in my stereo and hit "play," and frontman/driving force Ethan Eubanks leapt out, chanting with attitude over jazz music with a reggae beat, knocking me right back into my chair. I sat there for the next half hour, wondering if I could possibly describe this.
I'll try. Starting with the fact that Colouring in Time is a heated, sweaty, sophisticated, funky, musically elegant and vocally swaggering collection of songs. It's pure showmanship with a jagged attention span. Pure elegance in the horn arrangements and pure raunch in the attitude. The punk who likes opera. Getting the idea?
Gone are the touches that made this house a home
Gone's the clean sink and the sparkling chrome
Gone is the bed that you used to make made
Gone are the days when I used to get laid
Now it's poker 'til five and I get to watch Jerry
Feet up on the couch and my face I keep hairy
I should feel more like a man with my hand on the tall-boy Budweiser can....
...but he don't. He's singing the testosterone-drenched, my-woman-done-left-me blues with such smooth, constantly-flowing vocal delivery that I worry when he doesn't stop to take a breath. They must have had the paramedics on standby in the studio.
By the time the CD's halfway through, they're chomping at the bit throwing in snatches of other songs (including the Doobie Brothers' "Minute by Minute" in the song "Day By Day") and veering unexpectedly, mid-song, into a twangy tempo, then techno strange, then back to our regularly scheduled jazz/funk program. And it just works. This is a trippy, seductive, bad boy in a tux CD.
Drop by the Bitter End sometime and check them out. Be prepared to meet all kinds of musicians in the artists, rappers next to sax players next to folk crooners. You'll all get along. You may not remember a whole lot in the morning, but you'll be fine.

One of the few CDs where every song is remarkable and different.

If I had to explain Redtime's music, I would say that it's a wonderful mixture of jazz, rock, and hip hop. It's one of my favorite CDs and I haven't heard anything like it.
