notes
Lanny Ray and The Reels "BARE BONE" is the first release from the Southern California blues trio. BARE BONE contains an array of blues and contemporary blues material with rock underpinnings. The band's debut release features 12 tracks of Lanny Ray originals with a dose legendary blues classics.
Hits Magazine had this to say about BARE BONE:
THE REELS " BARE BONE": THE WEATHER'S JUST HOT ENOUGH TO UP THE BLUES QUOTIENT IN YOUR MUSICAL DIET. THIS CALI TRIO, FRONTED BY SINGER-GUITARIST-HARP FIEND LANNY RAY (WHO'S WORKED WITH CHUCK BERRY, ALBERT COLLINS, T-BONE WALKER, BIG JOE TURNER AND OTHER MASTERS), TURNS OUT LOUD, GREASY BLUES WITH AUTHORITY AND PANACHE. ESPECIALLY NOTEWORTHY; THE SCORCHING "JET BLACK RUBY RED," A SLINKY RENDITION OF HOWLIN' WOLF'S "WHO'S BEEN TALKIN'" AND THE UPTEMPO "EARLY IN THE EVENIN'." IF YOU DIG "RIDING WITH THE KING," GIVE THE REELS A SPIN.
- Simon Glickman, Senior Editor, HITS MAGAZINE
The Reels front man, guitarist and vocalist Lanny Ray has been writing and performing since the '60's and has played for blues greats BIG JOE TURNER, T. BONE WALKER, JIMMY REED AND WILBERT HARRISON. He has also recorded for the legendary JAMES BROWN and has toured with greats ALBERT COLLINS, CHUCK BERRY, TAJ MAHAL, MARGIE EVANS (JONNY OTIS SHOW ), HUTCH HUTCHINSON (FROM BONNIE RAITT), ALBERT LEE, NILS LOFGREN AND JOHN MAYALL to name a few.
In the late '90's, Lanny hooked up with Pat Anthony (bass) and Dylan Sardo (drums) to form Lanny Ray and The Reels. They anchored in Southern California and toured with George Thorogood and The Destroyers on the 2001 California tour. Recently, Lanny has reunited with producer John Leslie Hug and are recording a follow-on to BARE BONE tentatively titled "BLUE GUITAR". This collaboration promises more great blues from the trio...stay tuned.

Movin Up to Malibu
author: DannicoMovin Up to Malibu, is one of the koolest trac's I'v hear in many years. I seen Lanny do it kive many times and the room goes electric when he plays it. He has wrote a munber of songs I realy dig. When EVER I hear he is playing a gig nere by I try to make it. I've never been let down... the guy is amazing!
The REEL's BARE-BONE is as good as it gets.
author: B.These guys are as good as anybody - I mean ANYBODY. Stylishly-done, no song sounds the same, tight, clean and in perfect sync with each other. Strong writing, playing and vocals. The only reason they're not a household name must be because they lack the right manager and promotion. (I'm available, guys.) Kudos to this dynamite band.
A rockin' trio with one hell of a CD
author: Gene WebsterThis is one rockin' trio and should go far if their next CD is as strong as this one. Great original blues compositions, a surprising arrangement of Robert Johnson's "Walkin' Blues" and a tasty jazz piece to end the CD. These guys are accomplished musicians and show it by incorporating diverse musical styles from song to song. Highly recommended for anyone who loves Rock in general, the Blues in particular, and has an attention span longer than a gnat's heartbeat.
Very Good - Worth a Listen
author: Keith H.Would liked to have rated this 3 1/2 stars instead of 4, but since that is not a choice this CD is too good for a 3 rating. The only real negative to me (IMO) is Moving Up to Malibu...I guess I am not use to Malibu being mentioned in a Blues Song...but the song itself is good. They repeat the title too much. Anyway...go take a listen you will be glad you did.

A Texas Swagger
author: BluToothFound this CD through Electric Blues and glad that I did. This is a nice compilation a raw, in-your-face electric blues with some schuffles and good guitar. It defintely has an SRV, texas flavor. Favorite tunes: Soul Blue, Who's Been Talkin', Jet Black Ruby Red. Nice work and keep it coming.
