notes

Hi, I’m Joe Baxter,
I started the Regular Joes about 16 years ago with my friends Randy Cottrell and Dub Vandenberg. Chris Roberts joined the band in 2003. Andrea MacMullin played violin with us in ’97 and ’98. We had three drummers, Bill Condos, Jeff Wilder, and Tim Vermillion. “Sun Moon Stars” was our final recording project. It is also our only collaborative recording. Credit goes to Randy Cottrell and Chris Roberts for their songwriting contributions. This album has everything from R&B to Country to Bluegrass to Rock. It features some very fine musicians and has got everything from horn sections to banjo and mandolin breaks. We released “Sun Moon Stars” in 2005 and, as bands will, promptly broke up.
Always working in Oklahoma and around Oklahoma City, the Regular Joes were a very good stage and dance band. We played honky-tonks, night clubs, dance halls, beer bars, biker bars, blues bars, music festivals, art festivals, park concerts, car shows, house parties, parking lots and many, many charities. We opened for Leon Russell twice. We were always true to our art, and we played our own material whenever we could. We recorded five original and three gig demo projects from 1993 to 2004. Our other releases are scarce to unavailable. If you come across one, let me know where, how, etc…. (The Regular Joes ball caps are a collector’s item!)
I established this site as a sort of tribute to the bands’ artistic effort for so many years and it’s culmination in the album, “Sun Moon Stars”.
Folks ask me why we broke up. In all honesty, I knew I’d had enough when some kid came up to me at a bar gig and asked, in all seriousness, “Do you know any OLD music? You know, like 80’s and 90’s?” I still laugh when I think about it.
These days, I’m writing and playing bluegrass and acoustic Americana. I’m going to festivals and doing solo shows in Oklahoma City, Tulsa, and other places around Oklahoma. I’m having a ball.
I am currently working on an acoustic project featuring my songs and many great guest players, which I will offer separately on another CD Baby site under my name; Joe Baxter. Look for this around August of 2006.
I hope you enjoy “Sun Moon Stars”.
Your Friend,
Joe Baxter

Hello, again!
O.K., I never put the acoustic project on CD Baby. I never was very comfortable with the project and did not finish it to my satisfaction. Maybe one day......
BUT! I DID happen upon a very limited supply of the Regular Joes' 2001 release, "Every Little Bit Helps". The C.D. will soon be available on this site through CD Baby.
I did not expect to sell a zillion CD's doing this, but at least I sold the first batch, huh?
I'm still plugging along, playing whenever and wherever I can. I've been playing upright bass with a WONDERFUL young folk duo, Buffalofitz for the last year or so. You can check them out at buffalofitz.com. I'm doing a lot of home studio stuff, and writing all I can.
So, thank you, friends, for checking out Joe Baxter and the Regular Joes. Peace. Joe Baxter / February 2oth, 2008

  • Directly from the heart to the heart

Good solid lyrics that expresses what a man goes through in this thing called life.

  • LOVE THEM

Joe Baxter sent me this CD for Christmas this year through my father. I have been listening to it over and over the past few weeks. They are a fantastic band that I wish I could hear live (but I live in DC). The CD is full of variety and the songs tell wonderful stories. You will love this CD!!

  • Truth -- in all its versions -- worth telling, worth hearing.
    author: Ruth Baxter

Full disclosure: Joe Baxter's my brother. That's the truth. But what's also true is that this is great, unadulterated, unfiltered, undiluted truth set to music that you can dance to, fast or slow. Joe's songwriting is eclectic and nuanced and straight from the heart; there's not one false moment on this CD. "Sherry Works Swingshift" will remind you of Lucinda Williams and Robert Earl Keen, while "You Know It's Summertime" is going to have you shagging -- in the Carolina, not the Austin Powers sense of the word. Finish it off with a waltz on the "Southern Breeze," and give thanks that you've found an authentic voice of real America.
