Rather than being a culturally homogenous country, Italy is an amalgam of distinct cultures with unique languages. The northwestern region of Piemonte (or Piedmont in English), which borders France, has an especially rich lingual and cultural tradition.
"Reis Monfrin-e" contains 30 poems and songs in the Monferrato area dialects of the Piemontese language, performed by their respective authors and musicians.
The artists hail from around the Basso Monferrato (aka Monferrato Casalese): Murisengo, Moncalvo, Castell'Alfero, Fubine, Alessandria, Spinetta Marengo, Mirabello and Ozzano. The accompanying booklet also contains all the lyrics in the monferrini dialects of Piemonteis, English and Italian.
Also included is an extremely rare 1940s New York recording by Joseph Cerrina, which illustrates how emigrants from the Monferrato region of Piemonte maintained their roots across the sea.
"Reis Monfrin-e" is a rare collection that documents a vibrant culture.
