In January of 1999, 11 independent artists who at the time had never met one another came together through the use of the internet and the IndieBiz mailing list to create a compilation of their favorite R.E.M. songs. What you have here is the result... 10 months later.
The artists were encouraged to pick the REM songs of their choice and record them using whatever means possible. For some this was done by utilizing a home project studio, for others it meant a trip to their local studio.
The individual songs were compiled and mastered at 3rd Story Recording (Paula Cole) in Philadelphia by Mark Sir Risky. The results are amazing.
The material on the disc ranges from the Athens, GA supergroup's earliest days with Radio Free Europe from their first full length release Murmur in 1983 all the way through their latest release UP from 1999 and just about everything in between.
While not all of their selections were hits for R.E.M. they all hold a special meaning. We hope you enjoy listening to this CD as much as they enjoyed creating it for you

I love R.E.M. and it's really great to hear other versions of their songs and to know that they have inspired other artists.

This is really good. Nice work. I will show it to Mitch Easter as we begin recording our new album with him in 3 weeks. Truly a tribute.

Fine fodder for the REM fan
author: Music Dish (ben Ohmart)
As with most tribute albums, it helps if you like who the tribute is being paid to. REM's one of the classic bands now, so it's good to hear the now generation giving a shot of spunk to a few songs we've heard a lot in original forms. One such nicety is Suzanne Glass doing "Losing My Religion," complete with Andy Ruff on mandolin. The 45 minute CD begins with Hubbard's Cupboard doing a good rockin' indie version of "Exhuming McCarthy." I just about prefer this to the original actually. And of course the disc must end on "It's the End of the World," with some good drum programming from Goz Inyama. Not only fine fodder for the REM fan, but for the many indie bands bunched up here. Everyone has their own distinctive voice - nobody's doing an impression. Thank God.
