Album Notes

"Need some jazz that's a little more adventurous and free? Chaotic? Unpredictable? Check out it's okay to sit in the middle of the road henry (8bells), a new album by a five-piece who call themselves Renwicke.
.
I should say right now that I am a huge fan of improvisational jazz, because I never know what to expect. The music, the sounds, the mood, it can go anywhere at anytime, sometimes throughout a song. There isn't an overall mood of the album, it's just "press record and see what comes out of us". The album has songs with such creative titles as "dialin'", "sl.6", "-ing!", "nbbstrm", "OnuH!", and "+/- [apoc]". To the outsider, this may come off as foolish random sounds, but this is anything but random. Within some of these sound textures are some beautiful sounds where it might be a layer of horns mixed in with percussive sounds panning back and forth in the mix, or trumpets and saxophones going through wah-wah pedals to create interesting sounds. There's even one song where the horns seem to be speaking in computer tones, only for the second half of the song to feature a sped up drum loop going on being someone scratching and wacking a guitar.
.
I found myself playing this many times, it wasn't an improv performance where it is meant to be heard and experienced one time. The excitement of the virgin listen made everything a surprise, but repeat listens made it possible to hear these pieces with different perspectives."

In Renwicke's new album, I hear the chaos I see in the world today. I can imagine echoes of Iraq and New Orleans and all the other catastrophes that afflict us. Free and uninhibited, this CD is seductive and resonates with something in me.
