In December 1990, a 12-man chorus sang Christmas carols unaccompanied in a prison, a senior citizens center and at shopping malls in the Washington, DC, area. After the holidays, a handful of singers christened themselves Reverb and spun off on their own. And they've been spinning ever since. Reverb's sweet sound has resonated in churches and festivals along the East Coast, throughout performance halls in East and Southern Africa, at diplomatic soirees in the Caribbean and at military bases in the Persian Gulf.
Reverb (REE-verb), short for reverberation or echo, has shared the stage with Nona Hendryx as they performed at an Inaugural Ball for President Clinton in 1992. In May 1997, the group opened for A&M recording artist Ann Nesby, known for her vocals with The Sounds of Blackness. In that same month, the group performed five concerts as Artists-in-Residence at Washington's John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
Reverb sings gospel and R&B songs. Steeped in church-based harmonies, the repertoire is sacred and contemporary, original and traditional. A Washington Post writer describes the group's music as a "distinct mix of African, blues and ballad stylings [that goes] unrivaled for sheer beauty of tone and intensity of performance."
The group has appeared on Black Entertainment Television, Fox Morning News and on numerous other television and radio programs. In 1995, the group won the Washington Area Music Association Wammie Award as the best gospel-inspirational harmony group. In April 2004, the singers released "The Mission Statement", their first full-length CD.
