Album Notes

Quote :

"Rex is like a Bob Dylan with the voice of Lou Reed".
Christophe Kuentz

"These two sound good even when they're tunin'"

Kelly Coppage (while she was cookin' in the kitchen)

The "Trio Session" CD, Rex Foster's latest release is one of those chance moments in his history of live recording, where all the muses came together to dance.
After a series of concerts, the last one with Peter Rowan, he took his trio into the studio and recorded what was essentially a 10 song set. He wanted to document the music of this era with these two other musicians, Jeff Gilkinson on Cello and mouth harp, and Emmett Smith on guitar. He says later, "I never intended to get such a magic recording...it amazed all of us after we heard a rough mix months later. I new the first play through that we had something quite special." The style of recording was straight forward. Good studio. Good microphones. Good engineer. The three of them sat in the same line and positioning they had been doing on stage. With the exception of "Slippery Elm" (which had a false start) they played and recorded 10 songs with no listen backs, no overdubs, no fixes, no frills....just a stage performance in the studio...straight through (without Rex telling stories between the songs). He aimed the team down this track for 2 ½ hours. That was the time it took from pulling up to the studio till he wrote the last check and took everyone out to dinner.
The final mix and mastering of this project was done by Tom Roudebush at his studio in Austin. Not a lot of bells and whistles. And again, NO FIXES, NO OVERDUBS. Everyone is still amazed what a sweet live recording this is.
The real test for Rex was when he took his first pile of "Trio Session" over to his audiences in Europe. The Europeans who are into "roots" American music love "genuine" recordings. When they got into "Trio Session" there was nothing but smiles and high signs. (sometimes they don't speak English). So, when Rex got back to Texas he had more printed and has been feeling good at each sale since.

"Foster is his own man and his own branch of singer- songwriting in the fruitful tree of Texas. Saying this for me is like saying he has entered the pantheon of the best music on this planet."
Moshe Benarroch

From Luigi Grechi - His songs are jewels and his jewels are songs.

Rex Foster is an accomplished performer, whose music presents life situations to a lovely score. "Saw an Angel" is one of the most beautiful songs I've heard in years. You will be moved by each track on this album, greatly rewarding the investment of your time.
