The RACE!!! Quintet is a free jazz collective led by guitarist Ross Hammond. They have been actively playing in Sacramento and the Bay Area for a couple of years and "Travels" is their debut album.
From Chris Macias, Sacramento Bee Newspaper, 12/3/2004:
"RACE!!! is all about musical freedom, so bring and open mind and open ears."
From www.impactpress.com, 2/2005
"RACE!!! is a quintet led by Ross Hammond, and plays instrumental free jazz. They seem to be improvising the songs as they go, keeping things mellow and relaxed. The group is quite democratic, with no member taking the lead in any song, but instead all share the spotlight. " (AL)
From All About Jazz
“...Travels is entirely unrehearsed, with one song feeding into the next, resulting in eleven cuts of continuous, dynamic music. It’s clear the members of the quintet are quite comfortable with one another—ideas seem to be communicated effortlessly, and changes and chances are taken at will...”
Listening to Hammond lay out Wes Montgomery-like chords over a spacey, atmospheric backdrop is a treat, and much of Travels takes this approach. The grooves are soft and subtle, and the abstraction tasteful. His is a voice of the future, no doubt.” (James Taylor)

Great stuff...keeps the listener guessing...not at all boring.
If track three, "wings?", (with a question mark), is any indication of what Mr. Hammond is serving up at his next bbq...pile my plate up high. These wings are dripping...hot sauce all over the place from chin to tit. Give me more.
Boyce on saxophone is definitely on the mark. Eight cuts, but don't be fooled...some very nice long grooves..."free at last" is over fifteen minutes alone.
I'm no musicimatician, but I really like how the c.d. peaks & valleys...highs & lows...makes it interesting.
Track 5 is very nice too...aw, hell, I like it all.
Buy it everybody.
