Album Notes

When listening to the first track, When I’m Ready, one will be captured by the beauty and quality of this artists voice. It won’t take long to recognize that the underlying guitar work is also of outstanding quality. Looking at the credits you will find Grammy award winner, Bill Mize, doing the arranging and playing on this and three other tracks. You’ll also notice a bevy of talented Montana musicians chiming in, most noticeably David Griffith who apparently hasn’t met a musical instrument he can’t master. Mr. Griffith is also the sound engineer and co-producer as well as a member of Montana’s famous Rob Quist and The Great Northern. Listening to the rest of the CD you will uncover an array of styles this singer/songwriter uses including bluegrass, gospel, blues, and folk.

You get a sense from the subject matter of what is important to Rhanda. Most obvious is her family. She sings about her visits with her father in Over Breakfast and about her love for her daughters in Joy and Hallelujah. She has also penned two numbers that are spiritual in nature that frame this work starting with the previously mentioned When I’m Ready, and ending with the title track, Look To Me. This work is rounded out with a good representation of compositions dealing with matters of the heart and a witty anthem to what women really want in If I Was My Own Girlfriend.

In a state that has seen a large influx of people from other states, Rhanda is a rare gem of homegrown talent. She was born and raised in the small northwestern Montana town of Plains. Although it took her until she was in her 40’s to be able to record her first CD, you’ll find it was well worth the wait.

REVIEWS

Rhanda's music is rich and satisfying.

The music that Rhanda has drawn from within herself to share with the world is rich and satisfying. As I listen to this CD I feel compelled to get out on a roadtrip and mull over my own life. Rhanda invites the listener into a variety of worlds that range from the saucy to the sublime! Along The Way is a particular gem whose rhythmic and melodic contours express beautifully the wonder of the ebb and flow of relationships. There is contemplative depth to Rhanda's lyrical style that draws you inexorably into the wonderful facets of this artist's soul. Love it! Gotta have it!

This CD is like talking to a friend--one with enough life experience that what she says has depth and poignancy. I appreciate the wide variety of songs and the layers of meaning in them, they take me back to things important, relationships, joyful living, keeping dreams alive and more.

Big Sky, Big Heart, Big Voice. Montana’s own, Rhanda Johnson, first sang for our college theater troupe back in 1979 in Bozeman. At the time, I was stunned as much by her charisma on stage and her looks as I was by the sweetness of her engaging voice. This talented and charming singer/songwriter has been honing her techniques ever since. The depths of her poetic lyrics reveal the kind of searching strength that only an aching heart and a healing soul can confidently carry into word-craft and song. Rhanda’s welcoming warmth of vocal tone, her quiet faith, and the quality of her musicianship are unmistakable on this listenable disc. My hope is that Rhanda Johnson makes it Big.
