“The robust melodic rumbler,“Tryin’ to Find A Feelin”, that kicks off the new CD, sounds much bigger than it actually is, thanks to his relentless acoustic guitar, emotional singing and harmonica work.”

Alan Rhody’s music has been described by music critics and journalists as, “a seamless mix of grit and softness with engaging lyrics and striking melodies” or “simple and powerful” or “spellbinding” and many other such lofty terms. The fact is, that over a period of more than thirty years of performing, writing and recording, Alan Rhody has grown into one of today’s more effective and respected solo acoustic artists in that great expanse known as the singer-songwriter.
"Boxcars Of Memories", the latest of his eight full-length releases, is already garnering huge praise, showcasing his rugged, yet warm and clear vocals and emotive guitar playing. Rhody proves the critics right in this punchy, yet tender collection, whether singing the disc’s six new originals (including a co-write with Tom Russell) or the four covers he treats us to by Paul Siebel, Freddy Pompeii, Bob Dylan and Kris Kristofferson.
In his three decades of music making, he has played virtually every kind of venue save the arena, coliseum and casino. Rhody or his recordings have been featured on NPR’s “Morning Edition” and “All Things Considered” as well as CBC and CTV Networks in Canada,The Nashville Network, The Travel Channel, a Josh Holloway western film, a Murray McLauchlan stage musical, alternative and satellite radio, and endless festivals, listening rooms and concerts.
And although his songwriting has earned him nearly one hundred covers of his songs in folk, country, pop-rock and bluegrass, and multiple Platinum and Gold Record Awards, Rhody still prefers making that magical connection with a live audience. He also conducts workshop and participates in panel discussions at conferences and seminars.
Born in Louisville, Kentucky, sixty-two years ago, Rhody is also an art college graduate and avid impressionist and realist painter and portrait artist. His full-time music career started while living and working across Canada in the mid-seventies. After a few years of performing and two singles on London Records, his original songs gained attention in Nashville, Tennessee. In 1977 Rhody, with his wife Kathy and their three children relocated to “Music City” where they still reside.
Notable venues in recent years have included The Stan Rogers Folk Festival, The Kerrville Folk Festival, SummerFolk, Live From The Rock, Shelter Valley Folk Festival, Kentucky Homefront, Trout Forest Music Festival, The Ark, Hugh’s Room, and Woodsongs Radio Hour. Previous recordings have featured duets with John Prine and Maura O’Connell and musical contributions from the late John Hartford, and Gillian Welch partner, David Rawlings.
“Always solid, tough, trim and clear as a bell. He is consistently head and shoulders above the pack.”
