The Supertoke series is the epitome of what a compilation should be, showcasing a barrage of likeminded MCs waxing poetic over a variety of original beats produced by D-Ray, who’s clearly been influenced by golden era producers like DJ Muggs, RZA, Prince Paul, and Buck 65 (whom he pays tribute to on SuperToke 3).
Because Rhythmicru’s SuperToke series lacks in big budget spending, D-Ray and his cohorts have made up for it in pure creativity. The album sees them defiantly bucking popular hip hop song formulas and traditions for a more freewheeling approach. Gone are the Beat Jacks, the corny formulas, and R&B hooks that plague today’s Hip Hop. They've been replaced by mid-song beat changes, psychedelic interludes, and in-your-face lyrics for the everyman.
With an all-star-roster of over 30 Canadian up-and-comers including Shad, More or Les, Wordburglar, GhettoSox, Grand Analog, Two Left, Spesh K, and many more. there is an easy group chemistry that produces a very consistent vibe.
"A throwback to the mid-90's underground tradition without being a bad reflection of it."
