Rice Drewry has been playing guitar and writing songs for over twenty years. Early influences included the Beatles, James Taylor, Crosby, Stills and Nash (& Young) and Memphis own Stax sound. On his new release, “When You Smile”, you’ll hear some of those influences along with a hint of the Allman Brothers and John Mellencamp thrown in the mix. The CD was recorded at Sounds Unreel studios, engineered and produced by Jack Holder (Johnny Lang, Travis Tritt, Tracy Chapman).
Two of the cuts, “Still Have You” and “Don’t Talk About That” were included on the recent Best of MSA compilation that came out in 2005. MSA, for those unaware, is the Memphis Songwriters Association, of which Rice has been an active member since 1997. He also had an original Christmas song “Let Me Be Your Santa Claus” on the Santa Cause, a CD released in 2003 to benefit AMLS, a debilitating neuromuscular disorder also known as Lou Gherig’s Disease. Another compilation CD put out in 2005, entitled Flyin’ Memphis, featured an original song, “Mr. Jenkins” that has received local radio play in Memphis.
The singer/songwriter continues to be an active member of Memphis band, the Tumblin’ Sneakers and penned 5 of the 13 original songs on their self-titled CD released in 1999, still available on CDbaby. Although the Sneakers are largely a cover band, they always include some crowd-pleasing original material as well during their shows.

I Smile for "When You Smile"

This CD is simply wonderful. Every song is different from the next, which is refreshing for a change. I've listened to this CD so many times and never get tired of it. The melodies, from slow romantic tunes (Still Have You, I Didn't Listen) to rockin' fun rythms (I'll Fly Away, Goin' Down to the River), are absolutely engaging. It's truly a beautiful piece of work

Great Music/Great Vocals/Great Lrycs

I LOVE Rice Drewry's CD, When You Smile! This is the first time that I've had the pleasure of hearing his music. He is an incredibly versitile songwriter and musician and has a great voice. My favorite songs are Don't Talk About That, The Sky is Falling and Still Have You. I can't wait to hear more from him.

This CD is a jewel!
author: Blues Bebe
This CD is a jewel. Tuneful, literate songs written and performed by Rice Drewry for his solo album of 2006, produced by the brilliant Memphis-based Jack Holder. Variety of mood and pace keeps this album interesting all the way through. The title song, with its lovely melodic line, is a striking centerpiece. Influences such as the Allman Brothers and Crosby Stills & Nash are evident in the rollicking “I’ll Fly Away” (great back-up vocals here and elsewhere by Jimmy Davis and Reba Russell) and the haunting “Lily of the Garden.” There’s a bluesy “Goin’ Down to the River,” and an understated heartbreaker “I Didn’t Listen.” For pure fun, Beatle references abound in the witty “Abbey Road” (How many can you count?), while “Little Jimmy” is a danceable anthem for “open mike nights” everywhere. Rice also sings as a member of the band “Tumblin’ Sneakers—a CD by that name is a 1999 production by Jack Holder.
