Freeform jazz with occasional hits of mellow sun and machete attack
author: John Book, Music For America
Opposite Voyage (Music Artists Co.) is a jazz CD by a jazz trio consisting of Jeff Palmer (Hammond B-3, bass pedals), George Garzone (tenor and soprano sax), and Richard Poole (drums). Together they play against the free side of jazz that takes them to directions none of them expected. Each of these musicians are capable of showing their years of experience through these songs, although "songs" is putting it mildly, they are audio workouts that will leave you sweating and begging for more. While not as left-field as some of Medeski, Martin & Wood's late 90's material, they do allow themselves and each other to take the music to where it needs to go, with Garzone moving in and within the music like a snake, and Palmer splashing in color to complete the sound picture. At times things get very mellow, and one is almost expecting to hear a John Zorn-like machete sax attack, but it never happens. Instead, the trio never crossover into the completely free, but the freedom they share in these songs are worthy of celebration.
