Album Notes

"Richie Nieto brings about a refreshing change in the industry with his own brand of progressive music." - Hande Burdg, The Prog Files

------------

Originally from San Jose, Costa Rica, Richie Nieto has been an active musician and songwriter for more than 20 years. His bands and projects have spanned diverse genres, from pop to hard rock to progressive and experimental music, and they have taken him on several tours of Central and North America. Over the years, he has played hundreds of venues and has opened shows for artists like Sting, Jethro Tull, Yes’ Jon Anderson and many more. As both a band member and session player, he has left his mark on many albums for indie artists as well as major labels like Sony Music and BMG in Latin America. In addition to his composing and performing contributions to the Costa Rican musical landscape, he has also produced and engineered several of the pop and rock albums that are now considered musical landmarks in that country’s history.

‘Giant Robots And Sunsets’ marks Richie’s first solo venture, in which he employs all his cumulative experience and skills in instrumental performance, composition, production and engineering. With the exception of the highly successful collaborative effort of ‘The Hill Of Holes’, the album is designed as a one-man study in isolated composition and execution. All his musical influences rise to the surface in a bubbling pot of ideas, mutating and becoming a distinctive voice in a sea of lethargic rehashes. Unhindered by labels (both of the existential and the business kind), ‘Giant Robots And Sunsets’ is a bold artistic statement that evokes an immense palette of moods and emotions, from playful humour to violent rage, from deep melancholy to uneasy tension.

Fantastic!

This solo project has so much going for it. Awesome chord and tempo changes, sophisticated melodies, flawless execution. I wonder what Robert Fripp's face would look like when listening to this gem. "Caffeine", "Knucklescrape","Black Thursday" are agressive and intense, reminiscent of King Crimson's "ConstruKtion of Light" and "The Power to Believe". "No Carrier" is simply unbelievable! "Giant Robots and Sunsets" is great addition to my collection. C.

Richie Nieto - Chapman/NS stick-player in the same league as Trey Gunn an
author: Dag Fjellby
I came across Mr. Nieto when searching for Don Schiff and Trey Gunn. What a surprise! This musician from Costa Rica really knows how to treat his instrument! If you’re a Don Schiff or Trey Gunn fan, you will simply love this CD. Richie Nieto is unfortunately not very known. That’s a shame, because his playing, and the music he presents is in the same league as any other “stick” player. He deserves a lot more attention for his work. The music is just awesome. Even if you can compare some of the CD with the work of Trey Gunn and Don Schiff, I personally feel that Richie has got his very own style, with unexpected twists and surprising changes trough the CD. To sum it up; if you already own work of Don Schiff and Trey Gunn, BUY this CD. Richie Nieto won’t let you down, because this is one HE** of a CD, containing wonderful music. I promise you – you won’t regret buying this CD, that’s if you like “Instrumental math rock with Chapman Stick, crazy guitars and hyperkinetic drums". 5.6 stars :-) Congratulations Mr. Nieto, for an album that kicks ass!

First of all Richie is not canadian, but costarican, and he is one of the finest musicians to emerge from Costa Rica and Central America. This is surely a wonderful work of art, that definitely deserves a lot more attention from the international music community. Congratulations Ricardo...OEOEOEOE, TICOS, TICOS...

Superb production and solo project
author: Richard Whitehurst
Canadian Richie Nieto is probably the most interesting guitarist/stick player to be added to my CD collection in quite a while. In the style of the Worlds famous King Crimson Band, ( The finest band in all the land ) Richie takes it his own way with some psychedelic textures and unexpected twists and turns. Richie works with quite a few well known names in the music world as well on this truly original CD. My favorite tracks are Un-Sub and Caffiene. This music is fantastic. Check it out.
