Rick Fogel is a distinguished hammer dulcimer performer, luthier and teacher. At festivals and venues across the country, Rick displays virtuosity in his performance of classical, traditional, Celtic, and original compositions.
Rick captivates an audience with his mastery of the hammer dulcimer and his passionate enjoyment of music. The Whamdiddle Full Harmonic features Rick playing three hammer dulcimers, with a span of over seven octaves. His musical tastes are diverse, covering a wide range of styles and traditions, changing easily from old-timey to classical. Whether powerful or tender, Rick's music moves the spirit.
Rick brings exceptional technique and sensitivity to the dulcimer on his latest recording with the Whamdiddle Quintet. Their well-received album, Through the Looking Glass, highlights Rick's innovative performance on the dulcimers he designs and builds. Listening to Rick solo or in ensemble is a delightful experience.
In 1975, Rick first learned to build and play the dulcimer in Charlottesville, Virginia, after receiving a masters degree in nuclear physics. He has since founded the Whamdiddle Dulcimer Company, built hundreds of dulcimers, performed and taught workshops at the Augusta Heritage Center in West Virginia, the Wisconsin Stringalong, Northwest Folklife in Washington, and collaborated with the Seattle Symphony on a movie score and recording. Most recently, Rick was featured in a TV documentary for PBS and NHK Japan on the "Craftsmen of the World" series.

Through the Looking Glass
author: Leyenda DeLeona
Yes, my name is really Leyenda! I first heard Rick and Jennie performing in the Pike Place Market (Seattle) and bought a "tape" (it was 1992 or so). I heard the first song (Leyenda)and was so pleased with it. I had never heard it played (except when a friend tried reading music I found). I love the whole album; I recently got it on CD, was listening to it today and decided to check the internet for more Whamdiddle Music!

Through the Looking Glass
author: Fredrick D. DeLong
I first experienced Rick and Jennie performing at the Salem Art Fair (Oregon) in 1993. I was entranced with their enthusiasm and grace, lifted up and transported by their music to some level above us mortal humans trudging around in the dirt. I bought 2 copies of "through the Looking Glass" on cassette, one for my self and one for my brother, and their music has been uplifting me ever sense. Over the years I have played that tape till it wore out, then badgered my brother into giving me his copy and listened to it till I wore that one out as well. Bless you Rick and Jennie, that you are still playing and sharing your music, and thank what ever Gods exist for the Internet that has allowed me to find your music again!!
