"...That’s right, a one room log cabin. While many New Yorkers will hear someone from New Jersey whine about how hard their move to the big city was, nothing of the sort will ever be heard from Riffle, who grew up in a cabin without electricity and only a wood stove for a heating source. “Growing up without a TV, music was about something else to me,” says Riffle, who cites his greatest musical influence as his father singing and playing guitar as he fell asleep. The big location change affected the singer-songwriter, who told CMJ that his upcoming I Am Not From Here EP is mostly about “living in New York City, but daydreaming about the countryside.”"

Into Clouds
author: Lee Armstrong
Chris Riffle's EP is my introduction to this artist despite two previous full-length CDs. His look is androgynous and his vocal pitch is high, giving a gender-neutral impression. His music is acoustic with repetitive melodies that perhaps resemble Nick Drake territory a bit. They come off as mantras and do become addictive and fascinating with repeated listening. "I'm dancing around in my head, This happens at night in my bed; The smog from the buildings is near and it turns into clouds from up here," Chris sings in "To A Dream." "February" is a lovely meditation, "When February comes and winter turns to rain, I might be in your arms; I might be on a plane; I might think I know myself like I know this uncertainty, but I'm just like everybody else, and sometimes you're just like me." The title track that opens the set currently has a you tube video. The song speaks of restlessness, growth and continual change. What seems like a weakness, the similarity in tempo and melody, actually helps the listener move inside the music. Enjoy!
