When I was a young lawyer I had the good fortune to play piano with The Incognitos, a traditional Jazz Band organized by tuba-master Judge Robert Kroninger with the help of Turk Murphy’s band. We played around the San Francisco bay area.
Shunici Hirao, architect from Japan in San Francisco to design the Japanese Center, was with us on cornet. Ed Blanchard played clarinet. John Farkas was our amazing trombonist. Another Judge, Folger Emerson, played drums. Another lawyer, Bob Lamborn, played Banjo.
In 1972 we went to the Vance Studio in Oakland to record. We limited our solos to one or two choruses. My youth-at that time-shows in my attempt to squeeze too much into mine. The others? Just listen to Shunici’s tribute to Louis Armstrong, Kroninger’s roaring tiger, Blanchard’s sweet sound and the artistry of John Farkas!
Thinking about those of us now playing above the clouds, I thought I should re-master that old LP onto this new CD. With the exception of the poor sound on Royal Garden Blues I think it reproduced well.
I hope that people who enjoy listening to the type of traditional jazz we had in San Francisco in those years will enjoy this CD.
