(About MP3 downloads at CD Baby)

Mart's 3rd solo release brings forth a darker-but-still-hopeful sonic palette. Deep looped grooves meet melodic acoustic guitars on the Lower East Side.

notes

Martin Rivas, former guitarist/singer with Serious Pilgrim, current guitarist/multiinstrumentalist with Jesse Gage and Otis, returns with his first solo album since 2002's Bottleneck. A darker sonic palette fills Pride of the Valley, with Martin making extensive use of loops and ambient noise, but the glue of the album remains his distinctive vocals and multi-layered acoustic and electric guitar work.

Two of the tracks have already been tabbed to be featured in a pair of independent films. "Hope" will appear at the close of "Leaving New Hope," currently in the editing stages for Speedy Busboy Productions, and "Designed to Break" will feature prominently in "Showcase," which will premiere this fall for Thank You Stanley Productions.

Martin continues to write and perform as part of Jesse Gage and Otis, whose debut album is being produced by Grammy award-winning John Seymour (Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Bouncing Souls). Martin plans to continue making steady-but-sporadic acoustic appearances throughout the Northeast United States.

Lyrics, concert dates, and plenty of bonus tracks are available at www.martinrivas.net.

Hey Mr. Juke! FINALLY received my personal belongings from India this week ... JUST AFTER MY IPOD DIED!!!!!!!! (Don't know if you saw my blog abt it but I of course blame you for talking me into buying it.) AND ... although with one legal thing and another it looks like I am being forcibly shipped back to India thanks to my silly company ... My BS is NOT what I am here to write about - I want to talk about 'Pride of the Valley' ... I FINALLY, in this India shipment, got my copy - which mind you has needed to hit southern Asia now and then Eastern Europe b4 I got to dig on it with my own auditory nerves ... but now that I have it ... GODDAMN KID! Nice nice nice work!!! - and this is not some fan boy crap! You know me, even with friends I can be a bit of a critic ... ask Vinny. You have grown your already incredibly formidable talent into a force dude. Specifics? Nice as Winning with Flowers is ... (and it rocks) doesn't hold a candle to your latest works - I mean Damn Damn Damn Good Look? ... I say: Damn Damn Damn Good Tunes! Nice groove dude!! Oh Imagine? ... Imagine not hearing that tune ever? ... makes me miss not being at BTA this year that much more. From Hope to North to 'El' - all instant Martino classics. I'm listening to this now after pouring over it last night and I keep thinking - I can't believe I know this guy. All this sound - and all self-produced, self performed. Yowza! I personally have zer0 musical talent as you well know, but it only makes me appreciate yours all that much bro! I don't understand how you do it. You're a scary-talented bastid! - DT

  • Fantastic album; these songs will stay in your head

Rivas has nailed it in this collection of various moods from the peaceful "North" to the raucous "Hope". His vocals are extraordinary and the lyrics thoughtful.
