The CD and the band are both named “Rivers And Skies”. The CD has 18 tracks, totaling over 66 minutes long. We describe the music as “pastoral electronica” - an ambient, dreamy, instrumental journey into a calm, alert, gently mind-expanded space that flows like, well, rivers and skies. It's perfect for deep listening, or for creating an atmosphere for reading, writing, painting, conversation, sipping tea, laying on the floor, or anything else that suits you...
Rivers And Skies are: Jim Whisenant - Chapman Stick, electric cello, programming and processing; Jim Buhrendorf - electric, acoustic, slide, lap steel and 12-string guitars; and Ed Blomquist - electric bass and guitar, synth, winds, programming and processing.
Blending stringed instruments with computer-based digital signal processing results in a mix of the best of both analog and digital soundworlds. The design of the CD cover, with beautiful moody photos from Canada and Finland, complements the vibe of the music perfectly.
One listener said: "I think Rivers and Skies sounds amazing; it's beautiful and relaxing, but it also has that much-desired "aliens landing" feel to it. I've only listened to it twice but it's already in the rotation with Eno's On Land, The Pearl, Harold Budd + John Foxx's Drift Music, etc... "
Another said "it's provided a soothing effect against all the holiday related stress for me lately..."

not your typical new age noodle-roni
author: Russell
Rivers and Skies falls, I guess, under the general heading of "New Age instrumental". Don't let that put you off, however -- this *is not* your typical New Age noodle-roni. This is thoughtful, beautiful, graceful music played by real musicians.
All of the pieces are instrumental, with a heavy emphasis on texture and mood. The compositional approach is layered and minimalist -- there is repetition, and at times the music is trancelike, but there is little in the way of song structure. The tone overall is inward and meditative; the mood, a little dark. The pieces are relatively brief -- the longest clocks in at just over six minutes -- and each piece explores a small and specific set of musical ideas.
Working within that focussed palette, Rivers and Skies creates a lovely series of darkish, burnished, beautiful gems.
Analogies always fall short, but if you can, picture the imagination and creativity of, for instance, the Penguin Cafe Orchestra, but with electric guitars, a Chapman stick, a drum machine, and a laptop. Trade in the Penguin's whimsy for a mood of something more like sincere spiritual yearning, and you will end up in the neighborhood of Rivers and Skies.
One of my favorite recordings of the last couple of years. Great work, guys.

Where Haunting Melodies Swim Inside Beautiful Ambience
author: Justine
Rivers and Skies marks a beautiful intersection of ambient moods and haunting melodies. The ambient soundscapes open up a world, giving you space to breath and just exist, while the melodies of each track trickle and run playfully along, lazy river or swirling rapids. I recommend this album to anyone who craves ambience with a foundation to grasp or electronic with warmth. Most importantly, this cd will bring you to a level of calm comfort without boring you, and will keep your attention without distracting you. Perfect for any chill session, creative or otherwise. Especially delightful for naps.
