Several singers met together in Ann Bunyan’s basement in 1988 to form The Rocky Mountain Chamber Singers after two people approached her asking her to lead a chamber choir. At that time, the group was named Loveland Chamber Singers, although it was later changed to the Rocky Mountain Chamber Singers due to confusion with the Loveland Choral Society, and to demonstrate that our singers come from the entire region. That first semester, they performed at the Loveland Choral Society concert, and also at the Stanley Hotel, Estes Park. The first year Ann directed the group from within its ranks as she sang also. It soon became evident that greater precision was called for, so she stepped to the front as the formal director.
After performing in concerts and churches in Denver, Colorado Springs, Greeley, Boulder, Estes Park, Ft Collins, and Loveland, the Rocky Mountain Chamber Singers was invited to perform on a concert series in Rochester, Minnesota. Adding an additional 2 concerts in other cities, they toured Minnesota in 1992. Another concert tour with the Alliance Arts Council, Nebraska was arranged. The Singers have also performed at many church services, concert series and at local schools.
The Chamber Singers recorded their first CD, “Go Tell It On The Mountain” in 1995 in a weekend recording high in the snowy mountains at Eagle’s Nest Studio, Evergreen, Colorado. They performed in the Bach Festival in both Ft. Collins and Loveland and in a concert of the Front Range Chamber Players at the Lincoln Center, Ft. Collins twice. The review in the Ft. Collins Coloradoan after the RMCS concert at the Lincoln Center praised the group stating: “,,,an astounding display of virtuosity in technique, execution, style and versatility. The Chamber Singers displayed exact phrasing, excellent diction, impeccable intonation and a thorough knowledge of every style.”
The most fun took place at the Kennedy Performing Arts Center, Washington, DC in July 1997, when the Rocky Mountain Chamber Singers gave a concert as the representative group from Colorado for the State Days Concert Series. The history inherent in Washington, DC, and the chance to sing at the Kennedy Center made that trip a memorable one!
In 2000, Ann took a sabbatical which lasted three years. The first semester was directed by Shane Lynch and Robert Molison directed for the next two years. Ann returned as director in 2003. RMCS changed its venue in Loveland from churches to the Rialto Theater in 2006. It continues to also give its concerts in Ft. Collins.
The season 2007-2008 is the twentieth anniversary year of the Rocky Mountain Chamber Singers. Comments from audience members in the past have included “I have never heard such wonderful diction”, “Your selection of pieces is inspired!”, “Where have you been hiding all these years?” and “Oh – your musicality is wonderful!!!”
