Album Notes

Born in 1976, I compose, improvise, perform....all styles. I studied Classical guitar as an undergrad and recieved a Master of Music from the University of Michigan in Jazz and Contemporary Improvisation in 2002. I then taught at a University in Mandeville, Jamaica for 2 semesters before returning to the states to pursue writing, recording, and performing full time.
In 2003 I conceptualized and founded EN2 (a now defunct jazz fusion trio) and toured the midwest and eastern US from 2003-2005. We released two independant albums, the latter consisting of my original compositions, the first an almost entirely improvised studio session.
My latest efforts have been focused on solo recordings where I play nylon string and steel string guitar, a tiny bit of banjo, percussion, and vocals. I write about life, emotions, reality, spirituality, love, conflict... I'm honest and I try to let the music speak as it wants to. The creative force is powerful, and when it is most effective is when we acknowledge where it comes from and allow it to be unrestricted. This is the music on Desert Picture.

A perfect album for a quiet night at home. The vocals are smooth and the acoustic work is superb. The folk genre fits nicely, but there's also some reggae, a little bluegrass, and a little jazz mixed in. The lyrics are at times haunting and at other times inspirational. A few of the songs speak specifically about relationships with God (or lack thereof) and the second coming with references to the latter rain and zion's gate giving the album a distinctively Evangelical feel. But overall, its well written with songs like Desert Picture, Lonesome Midnight Highway, and Wandering standing out especially. If you appreciate music from a real artist and you don't mind a little preaching, pick this up.

I was truly inspired by this CD. This is Robert Coates' best work by far. His abilities as a lyricist, singer, guitarist, banjo playing percussionist are unmatched. The only button on your CD player you'll need to use is the REPEAT DISC button. This CD contains a mix of many different styles ranging from raggae,African, jazz, gospel and blue grass among others. Desert Picture brings a message of hope that demands self reflection. I am anxiously waiting for future releases from this artist!
