notes
THIS IS THE DEFINITIVE ROBERT LAMM CD.
In the beginning, there was Chicago Transit Authority, with it's ground-breaking blend of Pop and Jazz ... featuring the songs and the singing of Robert Lamm. This 'Avant Garde' music found incredible international success with more than a few albums.
Here is a new collection of Robert Lamm songs which will remind you of the eclectic approach of those early Chicago albums, but with a very modern flavor!
Lamm says: "I've been attempting with this new album "subtlety&passion" and my previous album, "In My Head" to create rich harmonic structure, with great live players, and loops, beats, samples. . . . . WITH MELODIES AND CHORD CHANGES. . I wanted to avoid 'one chord' songs, we get too much of that from otherwise really great young singers, rappers, and bands."

WOW !!

Subtlety & Passion
author: Cynthia B. HarrisVery enjoyable listen!!!!! Nice variety of musical arrangements, which you don't notice the high level of complexity therin. This is a positive depiction of the challenges we face in today's uncertain world. Would recommend this cd to anyone who simply enjoys listening to good music that is simultaneously both positive and moving as well as romantic. My 15 year-old son loves "Gimme Gimme". Thank you, Mr. Lamm, for the great music!!! You are truly an amazing and gifted muscician!!!!
Bravo! Bravo!
author: Melinda MillerEven though I've been a fan of Chicago for 22 years, and am a fan of all 40 years of Chicago, until recently I had never thought much about getting their solo stuff. However, I kept reading how awesome this cd is so I bought it. And I have to say that this THE BEST thing Robert Lamm has put out out in a long long time. There's not a bad song on this album and the songs definitely sound like RLamm tunes. Gimme Gimme Gimme especially rocks my world and (along with It’s a Groove, This Life and Another Sunday) reminds me of the RLamm tunes from the past that I love the most. I was especially happy to see that most of the members of Chicago supported their fellow band brother by playing on this album. Buy this album and don't forget to buy the Leap of Faith DVD where he performs most of the songs from this album. It's available from Betty Jo Productions. Now let’s just hope there’s a tour in the works, hopefully with fellow Chicago member, Keith Howland and his friends opening up...
It's a Groove, This CD
author: Mike Corbett"Subtlety and Passion" is absolutely wonderful. I've played it everyday since receiving it. How could you ever get tired of this sound?
Radio Announcer
author: Dave FrazierWhen I first heard Robert Lamm's debut solo, "Skinny Boy", more than 30 years ago, I never thought I would have had the pleasure of enjoying his work in the 21st century due to the nature of the changing music business. Like Lamm, I did not like the direction Chicago was going in after "17" because to get a record on the air in the 80's, it had to be over-produced with electronic gimmicks spicing up every beat. Sadly, it is still somewhat true. Lamm's "Life Is Good" is a great body of work and should have received some air play; so should have "In My Head". "Subtlety And Passion" is a freakin' masterpiece to me (and I can't seem get the songs out of my head). It likely won't get airplay because of the way radio operates, but in my house it stays on the cd player. Thank God for CDBaby helping to keep Lamm's music alive. Great prices, amazing service!
Robert Lamm & Chicago
author: WormsignThis is sooo much better than Chicago XXX. Chicago should have just changed the packaging and released this as their 'new' material album. Every song hits the mark and with the addition of the Chicago horns makes it the best Robert Lamm solo effort to date. Keep it up Robert..
Catchy, groovey cuts like the OLD DAYS
author: Mark HopcoThe greatest Lamm solos to date, Jason and the Chicago horns make it sound like an authentic Old Days Chicago LP. best tracks--Intensity: Terry Kath's evident Guitar solo make it worthy of an entry on CTA to Chicago V, and the Bouncy Raggae cut You're My Sunshine Everyday makes you wonder why Chicago never added a great track like this on the Latin Flavored Chicago VII in 1974, when Laudir was playing percussion. I wish when I go to the numerous Chicago concerts during the year I could personally tell Robert how great he and his group are, and what a great inspiration he is to me as a musician. The only regret is that the CD isn't an hour longer. Every Track is entertaining, energetic and catchy. The melodies of the tracks stick with you immediately.
Can't Go Wrong!
author: chinolefanThis is a definitive solo project by Robert Lamm - truly the heart and soul of Chicago. He is a creative genious, and demonstrates his talent throughout this CD, which is arguably his best solo project. Grab this one, have a listen, and you will want to replay it again and again!

Hot to touch, cool to the soul, warm to the heart. A true Master of song.
To me his best solo work
author: JavirogerTo me his best solo work and very-very-very above of last Chicago records. We can hear fine horns, sweet bossa guitars, nice melodies, fine words, fine harmonies and fine musicians playing in it.
Still one of the best.
author: Fred MaciasRobert hit a homerun on this one. He needs to tour in the U.S. to get the word out. This album needs to get out to the radio stations because people are going to miss out on this great piece of work.
Yes!
author: Matt Luther WellsNow this is the Robert Lamm I know...Yes!
Memorable collection!
author: CarsonI picked this cd up at Barnes and Noble Books and was surprised it was really smokin! I love most all of the songs particularly "It's A Groove (This Life)" I will be keeping my ears open for Mr. Lamm's future projects from now on
My Inspiration as a Singer/Songwriter
author: Rhonda BennettRobert Lamm and early Chicago were my reason for my life's passion as a singer/songwriter. As a female and alto singer and classically trained pianist, I could fill Bill Champlin's shoes if he ever grows weary. My own cd is on this website at www.cdbaby.com/rbennett. I live in Thousand Oaks, CA (transplant from Indy) and still pray daily for a chance to try writing with someone as great as Robert. We met in 1988 at an Indy show and he asked me for "girl" names since his wife was pregnant. I told him "Mindy" since that's my own daughter's name. Robert is one of my my childhood AND adult inspirations....if it's meant to be it will be...my prayer is always to be successful on my own - or to be the first female member of Chicago :)
Primo!
author: BrookeSubtlety & Passion is a very impressive album. I wouldn't hesitate to call it genius. This is definitely the work of a very gifted musician!
My most listened to CD this year
author: James GedeonLike a great wine, Robert Lamm gets better with time. Further, with Pankow, Loughnane, Parazaider, Scheff, Howland, Imboden and - believe it or not - Terry Kath in the mix, it has the feel and sound of the type of album long-time Chicago fans wish Chicago would release today. Not a single dud from start to finish. Great riffs, lyrics and horns. Simply a great collection.
A very good CD. Very enjoyable. Robert shows what he is capable of producing,
author: Tony GeraciThis CD is very enjoyable. It is an easy-listening CD with jazzy influences and catchy melodies. A real good effort from a great musician. The musicians here also add to filling up the sound very well. A pleasure to listen to. Should get radio airplay for at least four or five songs.
vey cool, great voice, no doubt why he's a member of one of the greatest music g
author: kimvery cool! take you to another world. such talent this guy has. amazing
Brilliant, Robert ! :)
author: Olav M. Rønningen - NorwayAs a musician (mostly bassplayer) and a devoted Chicago-fan, especially from the golden Chicago-years in the late '60s and during the '70s, Robert Lamm's 'Subtlety & Passion' really brought back some of the good old Chicago-sound. This sound mixed with modern sounds from today is indeed a winner! 'Subtlety & Passion' is a very well produced CD with a great sound. It represents the best years of Robert Lamm's musical experience; both on his own and with Chicago. Nice also to know that the great and very talented gang from Chicago participates on this masterpiece, you can hear it. I have as mentioned been a devoted Chicago fan for +30 years now, but never had the opportunity to see the band live. I have to do something about it.........
A classic.
author: Brinke GuthrieTremendous album. RL rejects the formula that has reduced contemporary Chicago to a shell of its former self, and puts out an energized, 70s version of what the band was. Just tremendous. Why won't the band do this?
Rich, smooth, illustrative, fresh...
author: Rhonda WeeksI don't yet own this cd, but have the pleasure of listening to it through your website. Thank You! Robert's songs are very illustrative. I absolutely love this album. I asure you if your a Chicago fan and you like Robert's style, then you will be very pleased. The songs are in fact very fresh and up to date, dealing with current situations. I'm looking forward to hearing the complete album. Rhonda

fantastic cd that captures old Chicago sound
author: MattWonderful CD - Robert has done a great job putting together a CD that is fresh yet involves much of the old Chicago. Love the Terry Kath solo!
Will end up being my favorite CD.
author: Michael GardnerIt is typical Robert Lamm. I would have recognized the style even without hearing the voice. I like the album and believe it will end up being my favorite CD. It's a very good album.

back to his early roots
author: michaelRobert Lamm is back in style giving us his best work since his early days with Chicago. This album leaves the listener with only wanting more.
VERY IMPRESSIVE STILL HAS THAT "EDGE"
author: Dave SSubtlety & Passion..... after thirty seven years this cd, shows that Robert Lamm still has his artistic edge. Somewhere girl shows us he that he still has that magic touch. Gimme Gimme a catchy tune and a little dig to todays little pop stars. This album has something for every Robert Lamm fan and for anyone not familar with him as a solo artist its a great introduction
Great CD -- Very Enjoyable
author: ChiFan From ChiTownIf you like Robert's other solo work, then this is a must. Excellent CD. Get it!
INTENSE
author: SoMeWhErE GiRlI thought Robert Lamm did a amazing job with In My Head, until I heard Subtlety&Passion. This is Robert's best solo album to date and I'm sure they're going to get even better as time goes on. S&P is full of intense rhythms, vocals, lyrics and musically...well...it just doesn't get much better. Everyone must have this album!!!
s&p is easy to listen to over and over again
author: TerrieK2S&P is Robert Lamm at his best so far, also featuring many members of Chicago, so you get the "familiar" horns, with Robert's wonderfully rich voice, add in great harmonies from the likes of: Garry Beckley, Timothy Schmit, & others. s&p has something for a variety of listening tastes and moods along with Robert's upbeat & meaningful lyrics. I thoroughly enjoy this latest from a contemporary musical genius.
Great CD
author: Randy RSome great songs from a great songwriter. Some of the best he has penned to date - up to date, great melodies and harmonies. Buy it - you won't be sorry!
CD grabbed me from the beginning!
author: Eric W.With a new Chicago CD up in the air, Robert Lamm's new disc satisfies the void that we feel without new Chicago music. This disc has touches of old Chicago with "Another Sunday" or "The Mystery Of Moonlight", to more contemporary songs that push the envelope, as is the case of songs like "Gimme Gimme" or "Intensity". Very good to hear the horns smeared throughout this disc, too! Definitely one of the best CD's I've bought this year! EXCELLENT DISC!
a thought provoking album with incredible lyrics
author: Bruce Lomet (CHINASKI)Robert Lamm has created a thought provoking album with incredible lyrics. Robert Lamm throws in not only his "Chicago" style, but also his very soulful solo style on this CD. Virtually every song is a winner. This was his best solo effort by far!
Subtlety & Passion is Amazing, Smooth, Edgy and Ingenious!
author: RobinSubtlety & Passion is ingenous! This CD reflects it's title with the unique blending of smooth and edgy melodies laced with rich heartwarming lyrics and powerful vocals! The combination of harmonies threaded through each song along with Robert Lamm's amazing voice on lead vocals project strong imagery and a sound that channels your senses. This is unbelievably amazing work and I highly recommend it for anyone who is a true music lover! Enjoy it, you will love it!
Subtle, passionate, heartfelt, relaxed, energetic-a melting pot of music!
author: Robert M.What do you say about an album that mixes the best and recognizable sounds of the past (think Steely Dan, Chicago, and the soul groups of the 60's and early 70's) with the energy and freshness of today's hip-hop, r&b, latin, and smooth jazz? Outstanding and remarkable! The title absolutely fits this effort. There's a lush depth, yet clean simplicity to the songs. RL has created a work that truly reflects a renaissance man who has relaxed into his art and just lets it flow. Members of the band Chicago contribute, and we're even treated to a guest appearance by guitarist Terry Kath (who has been gone now for two decades plus)on the song Intensity, and who is probably the Terry mentioned in the Miles Davis/smooth r&b-sounding You Never Know The Story. I'd love to go in depth on each song, because they deserve it--they're that good! But listen for yourself and I know you'll agree. This is, hands down, RL's best work to date.
With these songs Robert proves he's not lost his touch
author: Fan From Charlotte N.C.when it come to great songwriting . He may feel like this one is Finished, but his days as a great songwriter are way from being anything but finished. If you have been waiting as long as the rest of the Chicago Fan community for something new from them... Well this CD comes about as close to it that you can get. Yes it's got a different vibe to it, yet it's very similar in a lot of ways. There are the great horn sounds thanks to fellow Chicago band member Lee Loughnanne; Nick Lane and Larry Klimas (both veteran horn session players and who have at one time or another filled in for missing Chicago horn players at concerts). Even fellow band members Walter P. and James P. make an appearance as additional horn players on a few select songs. And as a nice bonus the song "Intensity" contains samples of the original Chicago guitarist Terry Kath on vocals. So while waiting on something new from Chicago, might as well go ahead and pick up this little gem. You won't be disappointed... CDBaby guarantees it (right guys LOL)
