Album Notes

Rob Young & The Big Beat Band
"IN THE KEY OF FRANK"

Originally from Winnipeg, Rob has been a resident of Calgary since 1993. It is at this time that his wife and business partner Connie established Bistro Piq Niq , and one year thereafter Beat Niq Jazz and Social Club. With the launch of the Jazz club, his passion for this genre of music increased even more substantially. Rob had always had a love of music, and vocal performance was where his enjoyment of music seemed most pronounced. After the death of Frank Sinatra, local musicians strongly encouraged Rob to pursue his works and style. Both his physical appearance and vocal similarities to Sinatra seemed to make a natural fit. His training included working with renowned Canadian vocalist Viviane Cardinal, but most of his experience is self-taught. It is the love of writers such as Cole Porter and Duke Ellington, along with the brilliant arrangers such as Nelson Riddle that had Rob hooked. He started performing with many local musicians, and since 1998 has performed with the likes of P. J. Perry, Al Muirhead, Tim Tamashiro, and a large cast of supporting musicians. He has performed throughout western Canada, from trios up to eighteen piece big bands. Rob continues to do performances, specifically in night club settings, or at a host of corporate functions. He is still owner and operator of both the restaurant and Jazz club. 2005 represented their tenth year in business. “In The Key of Frank” represents Rob’s first c.d. project. It features local Calgary jazz artists that have performed with Rob many times. It is the ultimate flattery to have the
opportunity to perform the music, arrangements, and style that is Sinatra.
