Alone in the Belly is the much anticipated solo release from former Granfaloon Bus bassist/singer/song writer Steve Daubenspeck. Steve has assembled an impressive line-up of talent to hone his musical vision to its darkest (twisted) perfection. The line up includes:

Drawing from his experience as the second son of traveling carnival performer, who eventually settled down on St. Croix USVI, Steve gives a unique language to the pursuit of the American Dream and all its trappings. This pursuit has led him from the warmth of the Caribbean to the frozen mountains of Truckee, Ca, from the Black Forest of Germany to the Black Heart of Southern California, and finally to San Francisco.

Daubenspeck's ability to examine his life and the world around him without being contrite gives the album a lyrical strength so often absent in contemporary music.

Alone in the Belly(recorded at Tiny Telephone and Low Down Studios with Greg Freeman , and available through Magnetic Records) is a musical look at life through the fun house mirror, at a long abandoned carnival ground; funny, distorted, scary and meaningful.

ROBI DEL MAR, Alone in the Belly (Magnetic)
Man or band? Well, both actually it's the name of this SF recording project lead by Steven Daubenspeck (formerly of Granfaloon Bus), and it's the alias of the person to whom this cd is dedicated. Steve's voice is very much akin to those of Canadian contemporaries Destroyer and the Weakerthans, or a very young Bob Dylan. Very sensitive and frail, and a perfect accompaniment to the gentle, roots-inflected guitar melodies. Other players contributing their two bits include Danny Heifetz (Mr. Bungle, Dieselhed, Secret Chiefs 3) and Victor Krummenacher (Camper Van Beethoven). Just lovely. Recommended.
