Known for his killer pop hooks and strong Beatles affinity (Laufer was featured on Cheap Trick's "Sgt. Pepper Live" DVD) with Excruciating Bliss, his 4th release, Laufer sets a more adventurous course than on his previous efforts. The results, while a bit challenging, are wholly rewarding and revealing, especially on repeated listenings.

Juicy hooks still abound (Mary Entertaining, Faith, New Life) but expanded forms and freer lyrics set up a looser, headier vibe this time around. While his 1996 Discovery/Sire release, "Wonderwood" was perhaps his best known, it is Laufer's 3 self released CD's: The Iron Age, Swimming Lesson, and now, Excruciating Bliss that are indispensable pop gems.
