SmoothJazz.com Review
author: Scott O'Brien
Rob Maletick is an amazing sax player whose time has come. BACK HOME, his fourth solo release, sparkles with originality and top drawer musicianship. During his ten years in the music business, he has played an incredibly wide range of musical styles, with Gospel and Smooth Jazz standing out as his foundation. The man from Manassas, Virginia has been surrounded by music his entire life, learning first from his parents, both music teachers. He not only records and tours, but has a strong grasp of the business aspects of this industry as well. In fact, together with his brother Chris he owns an Indie label (C.A.R. Records, LLC) to promote both his music and other artists creating what they call “Inspirational Jazz.” BACK HOME is extraordinarily good, and consists of both originals and three outstanding covers (Sting’s “Shape of My Heart,” Alicia Keys’ “If I Ain’t Got You,” and Yolanda Adams’ Gospel hit “Just a Prayer Away”). The music has an organic vibe to it, featuring brilliant players with real instruments, among them one of my favorite rising stars, guitarist Michael Ripoll, who I had the pleasure of hearing live a couple of Smooth Jazz Cruises ago. Bottom line here is that I’m extremely impressed with Rob Maletick’s BACK HOME. Its moods range from sweet ballads like the title track to the percussive and jazzy “Trafalgar Square.” From up-tempo to down tempo, from Smooth Jazz to Straight-Ahead, the tunes on this album have one major thing in common… uncompromising quality!
