Album Notes

Rob Skane plays garage.folk.rocknroll music. Garage and folk are his modifiers. His life's subject is always rocknroll - rocknroll that is open, honest and unadorned.

Rob's most recent release, SelfNoise, offers up 11 charmingly lo-fi slices of life in the fast lane, slow lane and suicide lane. "The bulk of my lyrics are inspired by the fact that I am totally fascinated with people and the way they do what they do," Skane says, "I observe as much as I can, file away whatever I need to, and then come up with fictionalized slices of someone's life. And in those slices I try to convey thoughts and feelings that I have had. . . and I hope other people have experienced too."

The All Music Guide gave SelfNoise a 4 star review, stating that, "...This New York-based musician uses equal amounts of Robbie Robertson and Lou Reed to create his descriptive and personal vignettes. the key is the lyrics...

the key is the lyrics... and the sounds that rob makes with each song are used smartly. the song it's a great day is my personal favorite. the song brings me back to childhood swinging on a swing during playtime in elementary school. skane uses songwriting as a daydream crafted machine. selfnoise is a worthy collection.

Worth making a lot of noise over!
author: Gene Skala
I knew several friends in college who made thier own records that were very listenable, engaging and full of promise. Of course, after graduated they traded in thier guitars for briefcases and the vaccuum of corporate life. So with this in mind Rob Skane's ongoing musical journey is one of the best examples of how not quitting pays off, whether that means on artistic, commercial terms, or just because CD's like SelfNoise are wonderful to have in the world. Although '$15.00 Room', 'How Many More Times' and Mercer Street Breakdown' are highlights, but it's the quiet bittersweet reverie and cinematic 'Jennifer and James' that reminds me of the amazing artistic vision Rob Skane is capable of and often achieves on SelfNoise.
