Album Notes

Rocio Guitard is a vocal powerhouse capable of delivering any style of music, defying categorization. Her voice will lead you to laughter, tears, and all points in between… including the frequent shake of your head as you marvel at the just-right phrase or the rare display of “because I can” fireworks. On “JazzDance”, her 3rd studio album, she takes on the task of reminding us that Jazz was the music folks used to dance to, and bringing it back into the mainstream.

Marking a departure from the original material of her first two albums (Jazz/Pop/World on "Mosaique" in 2002 and Neo-Soul/Smooth Jazz on "Windmills" in 2008), Rocio decided to return to her first love and re-visit Jazz Standards she could envision in contemporary mainstream arrangements, without losing the essence of improvisation that is typical of the Jazz genre. “I’m very driven by the content of lyrics. For me, the music has to reflect what the lyrics mean to me, regardless of any previous interpretation. I went through a lot of Jazz sheet music, looking for lyrics that really spoke to me. I would sit down at the keyboard to look at the melody and changes and see if they were conveying what I was feeling, and alter them if they didn’t, to come up with an initial arrangement idea.”

She hired Greg Sankovich, a recording, performing, composing and producing veteran for over 25 record labels, to co-produce the record. “He caught my attention on the very first gig”, she tells us. “During Jazz sets, his playing would surprise, inspire, and challenge me to continuously work on my phrasing and improv skills; during dance sets, he would take any groove to a whole new level. We can read each other’s thoughts when it comes to music.” Their common love for solid grooves and great Jazz music has yielded a collection of truly fresh, fun arrangements of mostly not-so-well-known Standards that both Jazz fans and mainstream listeners can enjoy. With Greg Sankovich on piano/keyboards, Carlos Almeida on drums, Lincoln Adler on saxophones, Jerry Burdick on bass, Michael Spiro on percussion, Ross Wilson on trumpet & trombone, Kris Yenney on cello, Paul "Alex" Marino on body and additional percussion.

Rocio Guitard is not afraid to take risks, and is inspired by any chance to make a leap of creative musical association. Not attached to outcome, she does naturally what the best improvisational musicians strive for – create music out of spontaneity of thought, context, melody/rhythm, and emotion.

SmoothJazz.com Review

Bay Area jazz chanteuse Rocio Guitard creates an exciting musical review in one dynamic package, with this, her latest project, JAZZDANCE. What a review it is, too, covering a wide variety of styles… jazz, pop, Latin, and funk… wrapped up in enticing contemporary jazz arrangements. Do you like Manhattan Transfer? How about Dianne Schuur? If the answer to either or both is “yes,” then you already have an inkling as to what you’re going to hear on JAZZDANCE. After a sexy few lines of “Come On ‘a My House,” Ms. Guitard launches into a medley she calls “Foodie Toonz,” concocted of “Frim Fram Sauce,” “Peel Me a Grape,” and the Stones’ “Satisfaction.” And the album just keeps getting better and better, with creative interpretations of titles like “Respect,” “Harlem Nocturne,” Night and Day,” plus an absolutely killer version of “Sing Sing Sung.” Ya gotta get your hands on this one!

A Diamond In a Sea of Fools Gold

Ladies and Gentlemen, If you happened to have stumbled upon this album be prepared to be amazed. With modern twists, Rocio has created music that’d have the Pioneers of Jazz smiling. Track by track of JazzDance you’re drawn in by Rocio’s sultry voice as she takes you back to a time when genuine music was the norm rather than the exception. Backed by an impeccable group of musicians, the production on this album is by far the best I’ve heard of any album, in any genre. Crystal clear fidelity, fantastic arrangements, and grooves so deep you could drive a dump truck through. If you don’t dig this, you’ve got a hole in your soul, that can’t be patched by Justin Bieber. As far as I’m concerned this album is an instant classic, and will be in heavy rotation for a LONG, LONG time.

Even better than I expected!

What a great CD! I knew what to expect going in - fresh, creative takes on classics, grooving band, and stellar vocals. What I got was that, but more. As in, turned up, better, refined - like Barry Bonds to jazz. There's a really nice variety to the tracks - the band is clearly capable of just about any style - but there's also a consistent "sound" through the tracks. Soaring over it all is Rocio's vocals. Clear, clean, effortless, and stylish. She negotiates each tune as if it's a favorite highway - she knows the turns, the swtichbacks and where she can lay on the gas. And she definitely lets it fly throughout. Thoroughly enjoyable - highly recommended!
