Album Notes

Hi! My name is Roger Harrison. Thanks for stopping by my page here at CD Baby. With all of the jazz piano players, jazz bands in Los Angeles and on CD Baby, I know you have many choices. I appreciate the visit.

I suppose the compelling question is; what is the source of an artist's musical passion? What drives the person to spend large amounts of time writing, editing, and sweating over every detail of a song?

For me, the answer to that question begins in my late teens and early twenties, after being introduced to John Coltrane. I seemed to immediately connect with this being, his intentions and wave lengths.

I found that his music was the perfect tonic for whatever was ailing me. Some problem at school? Listen to Trane. Girl problems? Listen to Trane. Worried? Listen to Trane. Let me say that as a young man I spent a lot of time listening to Trane!

I became a devotee of the man, spending time in the college library reading about him. I found that his intentions were to uplift society through music. He felt he could imbue society with a healing vibe through his horn.

I agreed with him and from that moment a goal was sparked within me. Why not at least attempt such a noble goal?

Well I've found that this goal is large enough and interesting enough to propel me through writer's block, editing, software problems, computer problems, practicing, etc., etc. So this is my intention with my music. I want to uplift you.

I believe that artists have a large responsibility in society and that the search for the almighty buck has somewhat muddled it. It's not enough to simply reflect society; we need to lead it.

That was Trane's goal and I think the goal of any great artist throughout history. I think great art comes mainly from that intention.

So please enjoy Jazz Club, Open Late and drop me a line after you do. Would love to hear how you liked it, especially if it helped. I can be reached at harrisonjazzensemble@yahoo.com.

Thanks again!

One Love,

Roger

If you are one of those people who are put off by jazz being complicated or where the hell has the tune gone, then this CD is for you. The tracks are mainly Roger's own compositions and he also plays several instruments, but in his own inimitable, understated way,he manages to blend everything into an artistic whole, inspired by his acknowledged mentor,John Coltrane. Roger asked me to name my favourite tracks, which is well nigh impossible though his own MYSTERY is exceptional. I could listen to this music all day and I guarantee there is no better introduction to the world of jazz. If you are at all musically minded, you will enjoy this CD, my only regret is that it doesn't go on for long enough.

This CD is such a refreshing breath of fresh air! From the first track to the last, the relaxing sounds are mesmerizing. In an age where everything has already been said musically, I found myself with a little surprise from each track. No two tracks sound exactly like each other, and the versatility here is definitely worth noting. The short piano solo at the end of the CD is pure artistry!
