Album Notes

The nu style 4 Roger Nusic, is as he calls it, is Rap / Hip Hop with violin solos, and lots of Nu Joints is it. The winds of change were phat-N-howlin, it's time, playa to bang a nu beat & yo Rap / Hip Hop is way off the hook, tha best thing around. So I did a nu turn, learnin & playin, discova Yeh Yeh Yeh, it's the beginnin, it's all good, I'm breakin it in. Holla, Rap / Hip Hop is the bong, I can't get enough of it. Now recorded with "Burn Or Save?" & layin down the Nu joints, Holla.

REVIEWS

I think your "guideline" re: "not the artist in general" is rather heavy-handed

I realize this isn't myspace.com, but.... I've been a huge fan since "back in the day" - yikes - have always championed Roger's true talent - true genius - even hounded cdbaby to carry his albums. (Sadly, "Hello Lovers.... " is unavailable here.) I have enormous respect for Roger's unrelenting pursuit of his art, and for his unwillingness to sell his soul for mass appeal.., assuming he could.., which is debatable. That is - for all his talent, Roger never ( to my mind) seems quite able to weed out elements of his music that don't work so well. Cavalier opinion - he has always suffered from want of a good producer. Despite Roger's embrace of something new - hiphop - blech, "Burn or Save" falls right into the mold, with the exception that the recording/sound is even better than previous albums. However, apart from a few really catchy tunes and stuff that I know will "grow on ya", Roger still apparently needs someone to say, enough with the rhyming already, as well as a sort of desperate (albeit trendy) need to stuff as many words as possible into a line of rap. In fact, there is a sort of vaguely desperate quality generally throughout, which is hard to explain perhaps unless one cares to fall into the Christian vernacular, where seemingly so much of Roger's music resides.., except when he's paying homage to his sex-life. Here in Save or Burn (a moderately clever title), Roger's usual musical motifs and appetites seem to have simply been made more extreme - the christian part feeling a bit TBN, and the "love" part almost embarrassingly embarking on a sort of genetalia worship, which even the current slutty Christian contemporary market might balk at. At any rate, rap (as basically repulsive as it is) may nevertheless work for Roger. His voice and melodic tune toting have never really been his forte. Although - bravo for delicious experimenting with falsetto (U Believe). I like Roger's cuts when they are more crisp - not so much when they have a kind of blurry/muddied sound or when he lays on the reverb a little too thick. Ironic that the last cut (Gangrene) should have the shortest sample. All said, Roger at his worst is still (generally) inspired, and for people who never experience that spirit, it can be quite exciting. One might say that's what God is all about. I think Roger knows this. I take it he's found Miss Right, although I get a sense (from the cover foto) that he may subconsciously be resisting her attempts to get him into white shirt and tie as well as likely the first row of the local charismatic assembly. I look forward to the ultimate synthesis in this dialectic process.., even if it has to wait til the millenium, where I will make my bid to be his producer.
