Album Notes

ROCK BENDING JAZZ WITH A PUNK ATTITUDE

"The album [Beyond Empty Space] is fusion of the highest order, melding swing, rock, Cuban, blues and even hip-hop into a mind-bending blend of aural delicacy...these guys are good."
Dan Bolles, Seven Days Newspaper Music Editor

“We advance (in music or in society, as people, etc) by adding to and altering what already exists in the world. The music of ROKU is no different. In the group’s recordings is a clear understanding of rock, jazz and afro-Cuban musical history. The consequence is uplifting, mind-opening and exciting!...Explosive...If you are a fan of powerful music then you must see ROKU live if you ever get the chance.”
Burlington VT music critic

ROKU is a seven-piece rock bending jazz ensemble based in Burlington, VT. Since their formation in 2004 the group has gone through numerous personnel changes. Under the direction of bass player/composer Mr. Russ Flynn the group eventually developed into what it is today. ROKU focuses on fusing the sounds of rock and jazz into an accessible and more modern form.

Today ROKU’s musicians come from many different idioms, training programs and schools of improvisation. On their quest to play the music of their hearts and souls (a music of the 21st Century) ROKU has utilized these differences. Instead of sounding out of sync with each other the group’s music is like a completed puzzle where different types of sounds interlock forming a magnificent image.

The instrumentation heard on ROKU’s “Beyond Empty Space” is unique while still allowing for cohesive music. Soprano saxophone, vibraphone and conga create a counter balance to the often-heard drum set, electric bass, synthesizer, guitar and alto/tenor saxophone. With this instrumentation ROKU is able to propel the music of the recent past into a new and exciting era.

Members of ROKU have performed with many important figures including: Bobby Watson, Maria Schneider, Wynton Marsalis, Auturo O’Farrill, and many more.

ROKU would like to extend its thanks and love to everyone who has supported/influenced them and to the billions of people who challenge themselves everyday to grow as humans.

ROKU is:
Andy Allen - Soprano/Alto Sax
Shaun Feely - Alto/Tenor Sax
Justin Monsen - Guitar
Andy Mallen - Vibraphones
Russ Flynn - Electric Bass
Ari Diaconis - Congas and Perc.
Dan Ryan - Drum Set
