Album Notes

This live EP was recorded at The Joint in Los Angeles, California on July 27, 2003. It was one of Frank's favorite performances, largely because he just had so much fun playing with Todd and Barry (formerly of "Charlie in the Box" and "Morag"). The onsite recording, thanks to soundman Frankie B. was so good, it just made sense to share it with as many listeners as possible.

FAN REVIEW
I think Barry's percussions and Todd's Bass and Vocals complement Frank's songs and style really well. I love the opening song "I'm Leaving You Behind" and the song "The Only Thing That's Real." They are new since the CD and both of them just show that Frank's stuff stays good and gets better. Of course Without A Doubt, Look Into My Eyes, Don't Ask Me Why and Two Hearts are already classics to me I listen to them so much. I think this acoustic version of Two Hearts may even blow away the full band studio cut. I love that sound that Barry creates on Don't Ask Me Why. Look Into My Eyes has great energy. That's always a good song. I wish I was at this show but I'm glad I'm getting to hear it on CD. The house sound guy did a great job capturing it. Thanks Frank for bringing this show back to the east coast for us.

It’s easy to hear why Frank chose this live recording for release. There’s nary a bad note on the entire CD and the sound quality is impeccable. The show, which took place on July 27, 2003 at The Joint in L.A. , revealed Frank to be in fine voice and well-complemented by Todd Valcourt on bass (and backing vocals) and Barry Belkin on percussion. The recording kicks off with the slithering Valcourt bass riff opening of “I’m Leaving You Behind” , a fine new song about packing up, leaving some important people behind and chasing your dream. The next 2 cuts, “Look Into My Eyes” and “Without A Doubt” are previously released songs which, though decent-sounding, had their definitive versions on Frank’s Century release. The opposite is true of “Café”, the next offering. I wasn’t particularly moved by the “Century” version but this one comes alive with a nifty give-and-take between Frank’s guitar and Belkin’s congas about midway through. All through the song, Frank’s rhythmic strumming substitutes as the lead guitar. I don’t miss the lack of a self-indulgent guitar solo at all. Give me the rhythm. Next up is a new one- The Only Thing That’s Real. I smiled when I first heard the opening chord sequence. Basic and familiar but just right. Combined with great vocals by Frank and high harmonies by Valcourt, this one is an example of simple songwriting craft at its’ best. Don’t Ask Me Why is much more haunting than the original on “Century” thanks to some great effects and an almost metal-sounding instrumental bridge in which Todd’s bass briefly imitates a raunchy SG or Les Paul. Closing out the CD is a Romanelli classic Two Hearts. While this one really needs the full band as on Century, the version here stands on its’ own merits as Frank reaches for a note towards the end that this listener didn’t think he could hit but he nailed it. I pumped my fist at that point (while driving) and didn’t care who saw me. Bravo, Frank. Music this well-performed (and recorded) should not sit in the can gathering dust. It should be out there for the taking and I’m glad it is.
